I think that's indeed a pretty big factor, actually. Unfortunately there's no way of knowing the percentage of PS2s that was re-bought because of breakdowns, redesigns or both. But it seems the number's quite substantial.
To that effect, Nintendo might be smart to release a Wii redesign. It would definitely reinvigorate interest, just look at what it's done for the PS2, PS3, 360 and DS, among others. Then again, we wouldn't know if Nintendo might think such a move feasible. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Wii redesign sometime next year, though (but not a Wii HD upgrade).
