Forums - Gaming - What is holding gaming back? (my vision for the future of gaming)

I like the idea.  If every console could play every game, I'd jump right in.  I think there should be a standard.  The differences could be HDD size, peripehrals, bells and whistles (Bluray players, digital clock radios, etc.), system reliability, and such.  We can fight over that.  I mean, every cell phone can make a phone call regardless of the maker.  Every DVD player can play a movie.  Every computer can access porn.  Still, there is competition.

As technology advances, the format could make generational leaps like vinyl to cassettes to CD's to MP3's or film reels to vhs to DVD to Blu Ray.  The main thing is that everybody can play everything!  All Madden players can go head to head if they wish.  All Street Fighters or Call of Duty players can exist in the same world.  I'm getting a stiffy just thinking about it!!

Too bad it probably won't ever happen.

Thank you, kudos for seeing the awesome potential here.

Have you ever seen a movie called the gamer. That's the future of gaming. lol

Have you heard of utopia? Thats what we need to solve this problem.

If the online networks cannot work together then at some point one console will probably take a considerable (>50%) lead and then have a near permament control over the the market and monopolise it. If they cannot work together on networking then there can be only one. Where you have interoperatability you have a competitive market and where you don't you get a monopoly.

The market will move towards one standard whether people want it or not. If we don't get multiple hardware / single network standard then we will get one hardware standard / one network.

this generation proved that doesn't happen, how come Sony don't have monopolised the market with the PS3 despite PS2 having around 80% of all consoles.

Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong

Because the ps2 did not dominate the online console scene. Now that I know my xbox live stats, history and gamerscore etc will carry over into the next gen and so on I am more likely to stay with it. Its familiar, and I will have my friends on it already.

Online wasn't that important back then. Online is a way to lock people in to a particular brand of consoles. The reasons why the PS2 had >50% of the market were largely social. People tend to buy the console that their peers have, when they want to play online with them they HAVE to buy the console their peers have. The console market has always tended towards monopoly, the generation furthest from a monopoly has been this one but the unique situation which caused this is unlikely to be repeated.

Tease.

I just recently fantasized once about a One Console Future and it's something like this:

- One Console. That is all you need to buy in order to play games.

- Devs won't have to worry about ports, etc.

- Imagine being able to play Mario Games, Halo, Uncharted, Gran Turismo, Zelda, Gears of War, etc all on the one console.

- Combine the best features of the PS3 and X360 Controllers to come up with the ultimate pro controller.

- Motion Gaming with Move's Accuracy, WiiMote Shape and functions and full tracking using Kinect Camera. Pure 1:1 HD Motion Gaming.

- Combine the best features of XBL and PSN to create the ultimate online service (Free To Play Online, Xbox Marketplace, etc)

- Xbox Avatar System. Fully customize your Avatar with God of War Shirts, Mario Caps, etc.

- Combine PlayStation Home, Mii Plaza and Games Room together.

I know some of the stuff I fantasized isn't even possible but it was just pure fantasy. Though I seriously wouldn't mind a fantasy One Console Gaming Future like mine :D.

Kinda happy to know that this will probably never happen while I'm alive.

Hm. Lovely idyllic fantasy, but I'd say the chances of those things explained in the OP happening are about 0.00000000000000000000000000000001%.
