So no CELL in the PS3 confirmed then, good to know.

Do you mean PS4?

yup...

Editing now

I would hope they will at least have the CELL in the PS4 for the sake of backwards compatibility. Like they did with the PS2's Emotion chip at the start of the PS3's generation.

or a  streamlined version of the cell! something simple with the same power.

What Sony needs to do with PS4 is keep the Cell devs are used to it by now. Just Add way more ram, see the ps3 has a huge bottleneck that's why so many devs have problems developing for it. The Cell Processor is a beast but it can only do so much. There needs to be a lot more ram and I bet you 500 bucks, No one will complain about the PS4 if the ram is up to stuff with the Cell. So Sony needs to Over clock the Cell for the PS4 or Hell get a 32 core Cell which Probably won't happen but still if it did, they should go with at least 4-6 gigs of ram. Not only would Sony have the most powerful system but devs won't have the bottleneck issue. So what do you guys think?

Ram is still really expensive, 4-6 GB isn't likely.  Here are the memory stats for the PS3.

Memory:

  • 256MB XDR Main RAM @3.2GHz
  • 256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz

Actually I change my mind, It might have 4GB if the 8x the last generation trend continues.

well if they go with 4 gigs of gddr3 ram or 6 gigs of it. Instead of xdr which is faster but way more costly then i think it would be fine. I think Sony learned a lot from the PS3.So i think PS4 wont have problems like PS3 did.

2 gigs of ram are more than enough.

I have a feeling Sony might actually want to consider two weaker processors if the costs allow it. Cell is definitely powerful and should be in PS4 as well, however it has its flaws and might need a more usual processor by its side. That way they could also keep backwards compatibility.

I'm just afraid that's not a viable option, and considering Cell's flaws, Sony might end up ditching it. Sure, it's powerful and the devs have learned to use it much more effectively but it might not be the best CPU for all purposes.

Anyway, good to hear Sony's learned from mistakes. Kutaragi was a man of vision, sort of, but he neglected the public opinion.
