I was surpised by them saying that too, but then lots of user reviews said it too. That surprised me even more because SO4 had a good story, yes it had a good story...I went there.

Well it is true to some extent. Resonance of Fate's story is practically non-existant. The game has an overarching plot about some religious priest trying to reestablish his faith since he knows the true God, or something like that. However, only like 3 chapters are revelant to this plot, with two of those being the last chapters. The rest of the chapters are just random tasks or jobs, that are irrevelant to the plot. It's just one job after another with no proper connection, and a lot of the flashback cutscenes are vague. The ending is a huge wtf.

Also, the game is very repetitive, hence my petname, Repetitive of Fate. Around the 10 hour mark to the end of the game (and afterwards, since I platinumed the game), I used the same strategy over and over again, and it worked. I was able to beat every battle using the same moves, excluding the final boss.

OT: I would recommend NieR. The game has a nice sense of humor, enchanting music, and some of the best boss fights I've witnessed this gen.

I say RoF or End of Eternity.

All three are good choices.  However, Last Remnant is the best of the bunch, especially if you are going PC version.

I have only played The Last Remnant (PC) and Nier (PS3)... I still have to buy Resonance of Fate :P

If you made me pick only 1 of those 2 I think I'd choose Nier. The graphics suck in that one... but the soundtrack and the story are better than TLR's in my opinion. The story was so good and made me feel like I was going to cry many times T_T specially when you try to get ending B :P

Nier has many quests you can do which involve talking to people, delivering stuff, gathering materials and sometimes fighting monsters :P. There are only 3 types of weapons, one handed swords, two handed swords and spears... you attack with square and triangle does a different thing depending on the type of weapon you have equiped. There are quite a bit of magics in the game but I always used only 2 of the ones available :P. Nier has towns but they aren't big and there aren't too many :S. You can select 3 different difficulties (Easy, Normal and Hard) and it has 4 different endings.

The Last Remnant is also a good game, it's soundtrack isn't bad but I just prefer Nier's soundtrack. I didn't like TLR's story very much compared to Nier's story but it wasn't bad... In TLR you have a nice combat system... it is turn based and quite fun too. Your characters will often ask you for items and ask for your opinion on what they should be focusing their training on and your choices will affect what they learn. There are a bunch of extra bosses in this game and a lot of things to do... you'll probably miss some characters the first time you play the game :S. There are secret dungeons too!. After clearing the game, you'll unlock Hard mode... and if you found the game hard the first time then you should be prepared for what's waiting for you on Hard :O. TLR has more towns than Nier and it also has a world-map where you choose your destination like in Final Fantasy X... I found the game a bit boring at first but it gets better as you progress :P

I want to get Resonance of Fate because it seems to be a funny game xD this video I've seen in a forum made me lol :P I think it doesn't reveal anything about the story but... watch it at your own risk :P
