I loved Darksiders but you'll get much more play time out of Fallout 3.  You really should eventually pick up Darksiders though, I bought it new at $60 US and thought it was well worth it, but I can't bring myself to recommend it over Fallout 3.

I recently picked up Fallout 3 (not GOTY) for 5$ canadian, used at best buy. GOTY is still fullprice here :(. If you don't have the patience then I guess it might not be the game for you. It really depends on what you like.

I for one, am really enjoying it. Customizing the character to suit you. Travelling the wastelands and veering off course to go exploring. The nice scenery from atop ruined overpasses. The whole atmosphere and context of the game is surprisingly fresh and VERY authentic to me. The only thing I'm still having trouble w/ is the combat. I find it to be somewhat poor (not VATS) but I know it's not intended to be played w/o VATS. As for the VATS, I'm slowly getting accustomed to it, which no matter what anyone says, is odd (because it's different?) but I do see potential in it and as you build up your character and find better weapons I can see myself fully appreciating it.

Take what you will from what I said. Those are my opinions about 20 hrs into the game. (Not very far into the game tho, I get distracted so much lol)

Best game this generation by a long long way.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

Wow, no love for Darksiders...

Stick with Oblivion GotY, it has enough gameplay to last you years.

And I heard there are a lot of mods on the pc. Oblivion is an amazing game.

@voty2000: well play time isn't really my concern TBH I probably won't play for more than 10-20 hours, as that seems to be my cut off for most games, unless they are so varied and just catch me and draw me in. So if I can get 10-20 hours of fun from Darksiders and I will only play FO3 for the same time I think I would prefer to be able to finish the game rather than leave it hanging. It's strange I don't have the dedication to finish most long games and yet leaving them un finished just niggles me for months or even years (the fact I haven't finished Final fantasy 4 and FFTA2: GotR niggles me to this day) just a strange personality quirk I guess.

But having said that a lot of people love fallout 3 so maybe it will be one of those games that just grabs me and I end up playing it for 100 hours, it is not unheard of for me...

@ ShadowSnake: thanks for the input, the GotY edition is the only version I would consider for this type of game personally, just so I can feel like I have gotten the full game. There does sound like there is a lot content especially side content with random events etc which is always good.

@ ZenfoldorVGI: do you think so? Is it that good? If so why? And bonus question what would be your runner up?

@haxxiy: I know right I thought more people liked that game, I guess they all just forgot about it, my main concern with the game is how good a port it is. I will probably pick it up eventually probably during a steam sale. The other factor involving Darksiders is I will probably have to finally get a 360 controller as i think it's probably one of those games that plays better on a controller TBH.

Well, Fallout 3 is my favorite game of all time. However, I'm slightly biased. So, I believe that at the very least it is better than my runner up for best game this gen, The Orange Box. Other amazing games of note are Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, Bioshock, Tales of Vesperia, Modern Warfare, Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Gears of War, Demon's Souls, Persona 4, Heavy Rain, The World Ends With You, and Valkyria Chronicles.

...as far as why Fallout 3 is so great...well there are thousands of reasons, but I guess the most important one is the music.

The roads are the dustiest, The winds are the gustiest
The gates are the rustiest, The pies are the crustiest
The songs the lustiest, The friends the trustiest
Way back home
(Back home)

The trees are the sappiest, The days are the nappiest
The dogs are the yappiest, The kids are the scrappiest
the jokes the snappiest, the folks the happiest
Way back home

Don’t know why I left the homestead
I really must confess
I’m a weary exile
Singing my song of lonliness

The grass is the springiest, The bees are the stingiest
The birds are the wingiest, The bells are the ringiest
(the hearts) the hearts the singiest
(the arms) the arms the clingiest
Way back home

(What about the sun) The sun’s the blaziest
(And the fields) The field’s the daziest
(And the cows) The cow’s the graziest
(And the help) The help’s the laziest
The boys, Are the wittiest
The girls, Are the prettiest
Way back home

The pigs are the snootiest, The owls are the hootiest
The plant’s the fruitiest, The stars the shootiest
The grins the funniest, The smiles the sunniest
Way back home

Don’t know why I left the homestead
I really must confess
I’m a weary exile
Singing my song of lonliness

The food is the spreadiest, The wine is the headiest
The pals are the readiest, The gals are the steadiest
The love the livliest, The life the lovliest
Way back, way back, way back, home
(No place like home)
Home sweet home
