Forums - Sony - Missing HDD Space?

I got a PS3 earlier this year so I don't know too much about it but is there a reason my HDD is missing space? I got the 120gb PS3 slim and I don't have much downloaded.

I have 3 ps1 games that are less than 1 GB each, Valkyria Chronicles is installed which takes about 4gbs. I also have a couple backgrounds downloaded which are just pictures so they don't take much either...

That's all I have other than game saves and I only have 82gbs left and the HDD is apparently 120gbs

Any idea wha's up?

What about your hidden p0rn vids?

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

Anyone have a serious response?

Well afaik, 120GB is the unformatted capacity of the drive; once formatted to whatever Sony uses (or anyone for that matter) the actual usable capacity diminishes somewhat, just like pretty much any HDD. add in some reserved space for whatever portion of the OS is on the HDD and you might only end up with /- 110GB thats available to you or so to start with.

Add your 7GB's  (round it to 10 for convenience) of games, and you're left with about 100GB. so I don't know what would be eating that other 18GB.

Do you have any vids, music or other pictures loaded?

Or the photo gallery, Video editor or Home loaded?

very wierd...

maybe also try clean out your browser cache but I can't see there being more than a few hundred megs there at most.

Game installs and saves could count for the rest of the ~18GB. According to you sig, Saruk, your playing RDR & BF:BC2 on your PS3 - they require installs and saves. Could that account for it?

This is not an exit.

120 Gb according to harddrive manufacturer = 120 *1000 * 1000 * 1000 bytes < 112 * 1024 * 1024 * 1024 bytes of storage as recorded by your PS3

You have ~ 6 gb of games installed

82 gb left

Which leaves a bit less than 24 Gb of space for the OS itself, plus the pictures and other stuff you mgiht have on there.

Doesn't seem all that far fetched to me

I only have like 5 backgrounds downloaded, no videos, no demos, no music, close to no DLC.

When I ran RDR and BFBC2 I don't remember them installing, unless it did it on it's own somehow without me seeing. I also never use the web browser or PSN Home.

There is nothing on my PS3 that should be taking up that much space, btw is there somewhere I can go on the PS3 to see all the stuff taking up space?

Isn't something like what a GB is not being standardized when you're talking about HD size and how much space it actually has?

Sure.  I've put in a number of different HDDs and the OS always allocates a percentate to itself.  Unfortunately, it seems to do this more on a percentage basis than a fixed amount, with the result that the bigger the HDD the more it seems to grab.

There may be another reason but I'm not aware of it and I've checked to confirm the OS does allocate some HDD for its own use (understandably) and by observation it's not a fixed amount but seems related to the HDD size.

So I'm pretty sure that's where your missing space has gone.

I remember the first time I popped in a 250GB HDD and wondered where the hell the rest was after formating.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I understand that the OS takes some of the space for itself but 30GB? That can't be all from the OS can it?
