Forums - Sony - New idea for Backwards Compatibility for PS3?!

http://www.siliconera.com/2010/09/14/sony-japan-files-patent-for-new-generation-console-to-previous-generation-console-adapter/

It seems that Sony Japan filed a patent for an adapter that seems to allow PS2 games to run with the PS3. It looks kind of confusing a bit, but either it's a device that will allow you to play the games on the PS3 OR it's something that will bridge the PS2 and PS3. The first image looks like a standalone device that does the first option.

Pretty good idea. Away to make profit on giving consumers B/C.

hope its cheap

i always said Sony should have built the PS3 with optional B/C in mind, like a cartridge. you put it in and voilá PS2 compatibility

That would have saved them money on the initial Model and made them a profit from everyone who would have wanted B/C

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

If its just an adapter that attaches a PS2 to a PS3 then I dont understand the point.

I am more interested in the other patent shown on that website about the PS3 controller being used on the Old PSP models.  I would buy that

If this happens I will so buy a PS3. I really want to play some PS2 games but I would love to see them upscaled. Plus my family could use a Blu-Ray player on our HDTV in the basement (though right next to the HDTV is our new PC with a Blu-Ray drive on that ).

would possibly allow download of PS2 game disks to PS3?

unlikely but possible. piracy demands some sort of check - perhaps registered with PSN via unique number generated by the process...

From the look of the cheesy drawings, this is basically "the" PS2 chip removed from the orginial PS3 and some associated support circuitry to use the PS3s peripherals, and a power supply. A pretty obvious way to get full backwards compatibilty to any PS3. The problem is the cost of all the chips. Such a box should sell considerably below the price of a normal PS2 and I see manufacuring costs around $45 for this box. (It would solve the problem for Sony to replace old PS3s with full backward compatibilty, still under warranty if such a thing still exists).

if it's reasonably priced, I'll get it

My good old FAT 60gig release PS3 is working just fine for me. I love BC
