Forums - General - Blu-Ray 3D Exclusivity May Kill Format

It is so stupid that the little content there is, is kept exclusive to certain 3DTV manufacturers. Hopefully it won't be long before we can stream 3D movies from online services and this won't be too much of a problem by then. Until then, we'll just have to wait for more movies to come out in 3D so we can get more movies out there. At some point, there are too many to make the exclusive rights too limiting...

That's odd, I can't see past the opening post...

Anyways, this is probably the dumbest thing I've ever heard.  How can these companies really be this short sighted?

I didn't even know this was going on, if you can't buy these movies off of shelves, how do you buy them?

Yeah its such a shame, take a product people are skeptical of and then make it even more inaccessible, brilliant.

this is what happens when formats are forced on people instead of waiting for the right time. Glad I stream all my movies, and glad that I will not get into 3d until no glasses are needed

On topic: It's RETARTED to have different titles exclusive to different manufacturer players, PERIOD.  Last I heard, it was a timed exclusive, but that's still RETARDED.  I hope 3D movies crash and burn.

@ thranx: In reality, there is no "right time" for a format.  If a product is not supported, then it will not thrive.  So a product needs to introduced to the market to consumers to see how well it will be supported.  That's the way how business works.  And I'm glad I do NOT stream all my movies because the uncompressed 5.1 audio and 1080p resolution has been a well enjoyed treat to the ears and eyes.

There is a right time though. They could have waited until the 3d technology was cheaper, or until blu ray was cheaper, or both.  Since I lack surround sound right now I do not notice this, but in the future I am sure this will change as internet speeds keep going up.

Edit: Looks like this change is coming sooner than I thought(at least for 5.1 http://www.reelseo.com/silverlight-srs-51-support-toolkit/)

Define "cheaper," why that price, to whom does it apply to, and why those people in particular.

Hackers are poor nerds who don't wash.

Uh this is like the most idiot move i've heard of in a LONG time.... exclusivity to tv type?

Never been a huge fan of 3d, but i hope this idea just crashes hard and burns, and i hope people get fired for this, people who think this shit up shouldn't work in such a industry.... damn....

This is all bullshit. Shoddy writing and bad source material for the writer who ended up writing 4 articles based on the same misunderstanding.

This is how it works. 3D movie pack-ins are being used to sell 3D tvs. You're at the store, you want to buy a 3d tv to watch avatar, but guess what, it's only available for retail as a pack in to this panasonic tv......Or unless you just buy it online (but who would do that, amirite?)

The movies work on all tvs. They are not programmed to work only on certain ones. It is simply that they are timed exclusives corresponding to the actual tv sale.

The article makes mention of only 4 movies being available... check amazon and ebay. There's about 40 3d blurays on there.

That's...ugh...I think I need to lay down a bit.

So, to be able to watch every 3D movie I will need not one but a bunch of BR players.

Congratulations! This is the most epic fail since the squareshaped wheel!

Actually you will need to buy a bunch of TV's, even more expensive

I misread...

But then it's even worse!

nikkom you should really take down the article or at least make it known that the article is full of shit in the OP.

While this article has a point, I really don't care.

As a PC 3D user I can obtain 3D blurays quite easily and watch them on my rig using 3D vision no matter who its exclusive to.

I have the Panasonic demo 3D bluray in my drive at home right now. Virtual drive that is :)

I was about to post that this article is full of crap, but you beat me too it.
