Last weekend I decided to finally pick up a smartphone, going with the Samsung Captivate, which is of course Android based.

I rooted my phone, installed the lag fix (2285 benchmark BABY!!!) and the thing has been worth every single penny I paid, which was $150 before tax. Me and my girlfriend each got one since we were eligible for upgrades on my AT&T plan.

Anyways, being the pirate that I am I decided to download a bunch of apps which I refused to pay for like the SNES, NES and PS1 emulators. PS1 emulator for example is $6 and the guy hasn't updated it in forever, which is total bullshit, but that isn't why I made this thread, lol.

I am currently playing this game called NOVA, which is a FPS title with a full blow campaign. The game is setup in such a way that it is actually a lot of fun to play. Left thumb for analog controls, right index finger for aiming and right middle finger to switch between hitting the shoot button and swapping weapons. It really does work out real well since it makes good use of auto-aim.

Only about 1 hour in, but it is pretty damn good.

Also worth noting is that on the PSX4Droid emulator FFVII, Legend of Mana, SaGa Frontier 2 and Legend of Dragoon all run absolutely fantastic, especially FFVII and LoD. SaGa Frontier 1 has audio and everything but the video doesn't display which is a HUGE letdown.

If this fucker finally gets around to fixing this emulator I would gladly pay him the $6 for the emulator.

For JRPG titles a smartphone is definitely worth the investment.

Alright, just wanted to get that off my chest.

By the way, for those wondering if these are really capable of good gaming, here are some of my phone's specs.

Display - 480x800   4" AMOLED Screen w/ Multitouch

CPU - ARM Cortex A8 1GHz processor

GPU - PowerVR SGX540 with 90 million triangles/sec

RAM - 512MB

Internal memory - 16GB w/ Support for up to an additional 32GB MicroSD 

Operating System - Android 2.1 (Eclair) w/ Root LagFix

It also has accelerometers for Sixaxis styled controls.

I didn't want to mention this but Amazon was selling them for a penny with a contract. They're updating to Froyo right?

Between, why dont you use your PSP for PS1 emulation?

I do, but it is much easier to carry my Captivate to work than a PSP.

Also considering that I can use my phone at work it makes more sense too.

Also worth mentioning is that PSX4Droid is compatible with PSP Eboots for PS1 titles.

Take a look at FFVII on my phone. (Not my video BTW, but that is the same phone I have)

Probably for new contracts though right?

About Froyo, it is supposed to come out this month, but I won't hold my breath with Samsung. 

Froyo would help a ton since 2.1 only supports up to 256MB of RAM while my phone has 512MB, which Froyo would take advantage of, making my phone even more fast.

To give you an idea of how fast my phone is, on a Quadrant benchmark test the highest score is ~1,200 with a Nexus 1 running 2.2 Froyo. Mine with Lag Fix has a score of 2,285 while still running on 2.1. With 2.2 I am looking at 3k or more easy, plus my phone is a graphics powerhouse, partly in thanks to having a GPU separate from the CPU. 

hehe, good reason. Its very cool that you can use the PSP eboot, plus, it looks exactly like playing on the PSP except with touch screen control. Nice phone!

4" phone must be ugly though ;)
