I gave Halo credit for being basically the FPS of its time. But overall the game isn't that good. However the online was fun for its time as well.

Now I know you haven't played it.

lol... excellent.

So basically this thread is yet another stealth troll?

Every thread is a stealth troll

Was there no online in Halo CE on PC then?

I do believe the PC version has, or at least had, online:

I thought it was something special. I only played through the game a couple years ago. I love FPS. I thought the setting and atmosphere was the best part of the game. I also loved the vehicles and the cool sci-fi weapons. The music was pretty good to. I don't think halo does anything different from any other FPS,but it does everything better than most FPS in my opinion. Halo is'nt my favorite FPS of all time, but it's defenity up there.

Don't forget your helmet there, Master Chief!

This thread is an absolute epic fail.

Seriously, play any GOTY game from ten years ago and it won't compare to the standards set from todays games. But back then, Halo revolutionised the FPS genre. And this is coming from someone who has been playing them since Rainbow Six on PC (multiplayer yep) and Goldeneye. If you didn't experience Halo 1 LAN parties, you obviously won't understand what the "whole deal about halo was". The experience of having 16 people battle with the vehicles, weapons and huge battlegrounds was enough to make any hardcore PC FPS gamer (like myself) weep with tears of joy.

Maybe because you're like 9 years late. How many 9 year old console shooters are still fun today? Not that many.

Time Splitters 2

I edited your question a bit, because if the word 'shooters' was left out, I would have to list pretty much the entire catalogue of Nintendo's big franchises, as well as the majority of the strategy and role playing genres :P

I also added console because there are heaps of PC shooters aged 9 or more that are still great fun.

Anyway, seeing as this is a thread for stating opinions, I found the multiplayer of Timesplitters 2 to be much much more enjoyable than the multiplayer for Halo:CE. I never played Halo:CE single player, but TS2 has a really cool single player mode also.

I too don't see why Halo is quite so well liked

Because it was revolutionary, it had amazing graphics in it's day, it was fun, well paced, had a great story line that is deeper than some people realize, and had an aura of mystery behind it. I have yet to find another console FPS that rivals it in all those aspects. I don't see why Halo is so hated upon.

I don't hate the game, by the way. I just don't enjoy it as much as other people do/did, nor as much as I enjoy other similar games.

It had good graphics, yes (although making a game with good graphics is quite easy if you hide your characters in space marine armour) But I don't think it became so popular purely from graphics

As I said, I find the majority of similar games to be more fun than Halo, so you can't just say "it is fun" and have me instantly change my mind.

I'll admit, I don't know anything about the single player, I'm talking about the game as a purely multiplayer experience.

Anyway, you're obviously allowed to like the game, but you have said nothing that tells me why everyone likes this game so much - I rarely hear "I love Halo for the single player" What is it about the multiplayer that puts this game above Goldeneye, Perfect dark or Time Splitters 2 (obviously graphics are better than the N64 games and don't say the LAN multiplayer because playing with 16 players would be a once in a while thing for some gamers, and many would never have done it.)

If you can't think of anything but "It's fun" then that is perfectly acceptable by the way, you're allowed to find a game fun but not be able to vocalise the reason why :)

Off topic but-remember when Halo 2 and Metroid Prime 2 were coming out at the same ttime and Samus was talking so much shit about Halo?  She's not doing that this year!

Any time you have millions of people/gamers saying that X game or series is "The Best Of All Time" or something similar, you will have a minority that will go out of their way to explicitly express why they think all those people are wrong.

There are obviously a lot of reasons why the series is so well regarded and why it continues to make sales records. It's not ALL hype.

In a nutshell, it's like arguing that a small minority opinion is more right than the vast majority because one happens to be among that small minority.

But there's really no point in trying to convince that majority group of just how little fun they're actually having or just how wrong they are for enjoying that game/franchise.

It's like ranting against vanilla ice cream for being the most popular flavor of ice cream. Totally pointless.

Well maybe it didn't age well, but play that back in 2001 and you'd have been blown away.  Hell I was blown away by it in 2005.  And just replayed it today and I'm still blown away by it.

Really, though, I do think it is the weakest in the entire Halo series as changes along the way streamlined and approved it greatly.  But that's not saying much when it comes to Halo as even that game is leagues more advanced then shooters still releasing today.  The story, the gameplay, and the multiplayer changed a generating and it continues to do so.
