Forums - Nintendo - Question about 3ds

Well you know how everyone says you have to keep the ds at a certain angle to achieve the 3d effect. Well couldn't the 3ds use the camera for head tracking and the gyroscope for the angle and output the image so you would be able to see the 3d effect at all angles viewed for at least that one person playing. Could that be possible?

Probably. You're a genius. Go tell nintendo. If not, I will be outraged. Outraged!

No, because the actual screen/lenses are angled specifically to meet at one point 3 or 4 feet in front of the screen.

When you adjust it, i assume, all you're adjusting is the space between the actual screen and the second screen, that has both layers/barriers in it.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

This article will probably help explain the technology.

The focal point is actually a lot more forgiving that most people suggest. I played it at E3 and watched other son my team play it.  While the effect was certainly more pronounced while I playe it myself, I still saw the 3D effect while looking on from their side.  Granted it wasn't as clean but even during my own hand son with it, you didn't have to keep your head dead locked in a specifc spot to see it.

But the camera tracking idea won't work because of how the effect is created as Megaman79 noted.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

oh ok well I'm sure when the technology is there there will be a screen that can change what angle the shutters shoot out the image. maybe in 2015

Some TVs actually use the same principle you mentioned for their glasses-less 3D, they track a person's eye so that they don't have to have a fixed position in terms of the TV

This however is not necessary in the 3DS because unlike a TV where you can sit anywhere in the room, with a handheld device you're usually holding it the same way all the time which is in front of your face (think about it, why would you hold it on an angle away from yourself on purpose?) - reminds me of LCD screens and how they have a limit to what angle you can view them on (although it's not the same reasoning behind it)

what you mentioned is "eye tracking" : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autostereoscopy

hope that helps :)

ya theirs IS some play room with the 3D effect, probably dosnt' need the camera, 3D and gyros all working at once, you would have like 10 min battery life
