All my PS2-owning friends got the PS2 because it was affordable and had an absolute ton of games with a really diverse library, including party games, casual games, and games that won't scare girls away.

So now they all have Wiis.

Two of them have Wiis and 360s.

All my PS2 owning friends got PS3's.

If anyone here is really believing that the Wii fanbase is made up of former PS2 owners then Wii didn't expand the market as much as originally thought.

Oh I'm not saying that.  I'm just throwing my anecdotal evidence out there to counteract the OP's anecdotal evidence.  Neither of them mean anything.

The majority of PS2 owners either stuck with the PS2 or got a DS.

The Wii's main success is definitely from market expansion, including relapsed gamers.  I can prove that with some more meaningless anecdotal evidence: I didn't even have a console last gen.  The Wii brought me back.

I think that happen most because of the PIRACY!!!

Any idea why they would have gone to the DS? My first guess, if we aren't talking about just casual gaming like Brain Training, Nintendogs, etc... is the RPGs, but any self respecting RPG fan from the PS1/2 days would have a PSP as well.

I honestly just think that majority of the PS2 owners didn't take the leap yet to a new console.

PS VITA = LIFE

The official Vita thread http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=130023&page=1

Some are new to the PS2 and are either budget gamers or people living in developing countries so aren't looking to upgrade for a while.

Some haven't upgraded to any console yet for whatever reason.

Some bought Xbox 360s.

Some bought PS3s.

Some bought Wiis.

Some now play exclusively on handhelds.

Tease.

I got my PS2 during the holiday of 2000, I played it on up until my last game, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in 2004. Circa 2002, I was purchased a new PC for college and stuck with almost exclusive PC gaming from 2002 until September 2008.

In September 2008, I was hyped about Fallout 3. My PC, the one I got circa 2002, could not run Fallout 3. The price of the PS3 at the time was still in the $400-600 range.

I ended up going with a used 360 off of Amazon for less than $200. It RROD in April 2009. I got it fixed for free by Microsoft in July 2009 after I finally put down the World of Warcraft.

Why did I go from PS2 to the 360 instead of the PS3? Price and experience with Microsoft Gaming's quality products via the Age of Empires series.
