Sony Ericsson plans to be top Android-handset maker

updated 07:10 pm EDT, Wed September 1

2010 Current market share sits at 17% for Android

Sony Ericsson reportedly announced that it intends to become the world's top producer of Android-based smartphones, according to a BusinessWeek report. CEO Bert Nordberg claims the company has established a 17 percent share in the Android market, while the leader currently holds a 23 percent stake.

Although Nordberg declined to identify the current company that leads Android sales, the company competes directly with rivals HTC, Motorola and Samsung. Sony Ericsson currently has a more limited Android selection than its competition, with sales limited to the XPERIA X10, X10 mini, and X10 mini pro. The company's next Android phone, the X8, has yet to arrive on the marke

A separate analyst report suggests the London-based company has been comparatively slow to engage the smartphone market. The transition has resulted in reduced market share in the overall mobile market for the second quarter of the year, while rivals HTC and Samsung continue to grow.

That'd do it for me

As long as they make it a PSP...With phone capability.....

and not a Phone...that plays PSP games

Just waiting for that PS Vita to come out so I can play some full featured games on the go with that beautiful screen and control scheme...

Well if I had to guess #1 would be HTC,  they seemed to have supported Android the longest.  I am just curious as to where they go their numbers from,  I didnt think that many Sony phones had Android, meanwhile there are alot of HTC phones that do.

I've never met anyone with a Sony phone with android, didn't even know they made one.  How do they have 17% market share?  Is it big in Japan or are they messing around with the numbers?

I guess if you can't beat them, join them...

think about what you just said..have you noticed it does not matter anymore!

look at the smartphones recently most all smartphones come with dedicated 3D graphic accelerator's, DSP's or what ever..the majority are 1 GHz processors! the only thing missing online distribution for games which is there and phone storage in the upper GB which is also there an the last most need thing was a dedicated gamer control's.

all of which is on the way in smartphone arena its not only Sony that is also making phones that way.

example:

say for instance how would this be any thing in it's gaming experience than say the PSP if your talking hardware. this hardware with a 1 GHz processor and it's 600 Mhz DSP will burry the PSPGo's spec's

that's i think the real pointer the Smartphone industry has grown not only in market share but also the spec's of the smartphone's themselves can and are already robust enough that they in their own right are very capable game handhelds. the real problem for some was a dedicated handheld control system for smartphones. the New PSPGo is a great example of how those control's can be put on smartphones.

need a KB, no problem touch screen phones already come with Key boards

Like the article said what they have is VERY limited now (number of devices that is) but if I'm not mistaken Xperia X10 is the most popular phone in Japan right now. I'll be getting my around end of December/early January I think. It's a slick phone

ps: Dunno why you haven't met anyone with SE Android phones tho, I have met quite a few already here

Well the only one I am aware of that is available in the USA is the X10 and that only launched recently and only on the AT&T network.  And other than in the stores I have never seen one either.  Plus there are better Android phones available on AT&T network

Most people I know have HTC's and Motoralo's.  The Xperia does look pretty slick though.

Edit:  I should point out that where I live Cell South is the only reliable carrier and their phone selection sucks.

I hope this means they're gonna up the ante. I love Sony Ericsson phones, so hopefully they'll have a great one out by the time I need a new phone.
