Forums - Sony - Resistance 3 requires HUGE jump to compete!?

With the recent footage of both Killzone 3 and inFamous 2, does Insomniac need to make huge (and I mean HUGE) changes to their delivery of Resistance 3 to compete?

Last year Killzone 2 came out and pulled the award of best PS3 graphics/tech away from Uncharted and MGS4, later in the year Uncharted 2 pulled it back and then there was a tussle with GOW3, although it generally accepted that graphics and in general in-game tech have come on sensationally in the last few years on the PS3.

inFamous was probably one of the best sandbox games on any console graphically when it released in May 2009, but now here we are in mid to late 2010 and going by recent videos, both Killzone 3 and inFamous 2 are moving on in leaps and bounds from what the previous games produced.  I am in no doubt that Uncharted 3 will be another big jump from the second in the series.

So what does Insomniac need to do to bring Resistance up to date?  Well, we all know that R1 was rushed for day one delivery and therefore couldn't have all the bells and whistles that Insomniac wanted for the game, so when R2 released we were all expecting huge changes.  There was some big changes, but it's generally accepted that the overall engine and polish wasn't entirely there compared to what was just round the corner.  We are now being told that Insomniac are working to a 3 year development cycle for games, which should give them the extra time required to polish their games, but will this be enough?

Not only does R3 need to be polished up to the max, but the tech behind the game needs to be moved on some way from what R2 used.  Of course we don't know what exactly Insomniac have managed to do, and we all know that they are a very talented bunch, but what exactly do they need to do to compete with the HUGE hitters in 2011.

Killzone 3 is going to be a larger scale game compared to Killzone 2, so in theory what R2 was to R1, but even the K2 engine seems lightyears ahead of what R2 used and there was only 3 months of a difference in delivery dates.

inFamous 2 being an open ended sandbox game would normally have "lesser" graphics and the tech involved would be too busy with the huge world and it's going ons than working on the graphics...but looking at the latest footage and it seems that Sucker Punch have nearly managed to get the game looking as good as Uncharted 2 which is simply amazing.

So graphically and technically does Insomniac engine need to compete with these 2 games?

Definitely. They'll need to do something mind blowing or revolutionary if they want to compete with the top dogs. They can't use old Resistance 1 & 2 graphics anymore, either they pump it up, or do something amazing with the gameplay [4 player splitscreen online anyone?]

All the big games are noticed for three things: Graphics [Killzone 2, God of War], Originality [Portal, Left 4 Dead], or Storyline [Bioshock, Heavy Rain]. Things like Uncharted 2 combine all three things, which is why it got so many great reviews.

Insomniac has to realize this and do something about Resistance, or else it will be classified as all the other FPS in the aisle, and won't get any notice at all.

The simple answer to this is yes...but the thing is I think they will as well.

Third person shooter or bust!

Competing for graphics is FPS games is a waste of time, too many look good that even the best isn't much better than others.  Need compete with gameplay and features, and high quality third person shooters on PS3 aren't anywhere near as common.

The only high quality Third Person shooters I can think of are Uncharted and Gears. Everything is meh in comparison.

Resistance 3 just needs to follow the Fall of Man formula of local co-op, crazy weapons, an interesting plot and then chuck in all sorts of new stuff to keep it fresh.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

I believe in Insomniac and they'll deliver what fans want.

R3 is be the best in the series.

There was nothing graphically amazing about Infamous and Infamous 2 looks nowhere as good as Uncharted 2 let alone the best looking open world game.

I think insomniac knows this, thus no need to worry, they will deliver, I think R3 will go the way U2 and K2 did.

nah , it only needs split screen coop campaign and it will be a much better game

- Wasteland - The Mission.

To get me to buy it? Scrap the game all together and start the project over like a completely new IP.

Which they wont... so i'll just get Killzone.

Gameplay:

  • Great environments
  • Interesting battles
  • Responsive controls
  • Local multiplayer
  • Move support
