@superchunk -- makes sense

It makes sense because, Sony already has a Playstation stack already working on Android!

"“We have done extensive skinning of the Android platform. because we really wanted to make it a bespoke experience,” says George Arriola, head of user experience for Sony Ericcson.

Sony’s UXP interface attempts to do the same thing as rivals like Motorola’s MotoBLUR: namely, aggregate social networking feeds such as Facebook and Twitter into one stream, integrate that data with your phone address book and contacts, and personalize the multimedia experience.

“We took a very sophisticated PlayStation middleware and shrunk it to fit the Android OS,” says Arriola.

yeah, but what chunk suggested will be a big change of business model, from having a handheld plus games........to just games that work on many android phones

it's not a change in business, it's just an expansion of it's existing model. think about this the games made will still work on the PSPGo!

the Idea just because they move to add another Hand held like a smartphone does not mean they have to drop the orig. PSP it just mean's they can keep the PSPGo in the market and lower it's price but keep it on the market. It may not get as many sales but when your still selling 80,000 PSP's world wide a week that's nothing to sneeze for a system that's old, esp a hand held.

and all psp's even the origional can still get their games from ....wait for it... PSN. so it does not leave anyone out.

the IDEA is just like the PDA market the smart phone market is prime an geared to gobble up the dedicated hand held game market's market share..but so what if it does...think about this the markets so freakin large it does not really matter, sony is putting the PSP..platform in a much larger space which mean's a ton of growth. Any Hand held in this day in age play's more than "just games" the idea of just the game console is pretty much done . that is long gone. and most likely never coming back.

the reason being would you ever see the day that a game console does more than just play games..even nintendo Wii, DS, and even the new 3DS does more than just play game's.

the Games console has moved on..by convergence.

well, yes having a new PSP with games, and allowing other android phones to have PSN games *would*
be the same model.....but chunk said that this would probably mean that there wouldn't be a "PSP" after this next one, because any phone could use the PSN.  It just sounds like a big change, that's all.

Q: what is a PSP?

The Playstation Portable (officially abbreviated PSP) is a handheld game console manufactured and marketed by Sony Computer Entertainment.

A PSPphone what would change with that Definition nothing..it's still made by sony!

the fact that if and I do mean If sony allowed other Android phones to access PSN and download the PSN games would that make an Android phone a PSP?

but what if Sony allows other manuf. to make a PSP also! would that still be a PSP?

all of those could access the same PSN!

what if the New PSP is not by hardware but by licence and software access to the PSN! added to Android phones that pass the needed min spec's.

all that i'm saying is that it would change things.  Now Sony's PSP business would be comprised of being a games publisher and developer instead of something more traditional.  It would also change things in that Sony would have to move to a volume kind of model, where basically every Sony phone would have a PSN availability, and since Sony's games would be competing with every other developer's games, they would get a small profit margin for the whole thing because Sony would be just another developer for games out of many and therefore under a pure competition kind of model, you will require low prices because firms that face several competitors dont have that much strength in competing against other companies.  I think that Sony could still make some $$$$$ because they have a pretty big and efficient 1st party system, whereas a lot of developers are pretty small, especially for phone games.

That said,  mabey Sony will have all kinds of android apps available, but leave the available games exclusively for the PSN

DId you both know that Sony already publishes games outside of Playstation brand?

They make games for Facebook and general Web based; both of which never touches a Playstation branded device.

What I see happening is all Android devices will have access to PSN and the greater majority of its content from music, movies, to games.

I see a PS3/4/5 etc all accessing that same content plus more exclusive download games as well as disc/cart based games.

I see a very small possibility of a new PSP line that is not a phone but has android and PSN plus some disc/cart based games as well.

I both of the latter scenarios, the disc/cart based games would be the selling point of that device along with better hardware than the pspPhone or any other Android phone.

On top of that, we'll see Sony tablets ect, with Android OS and gaming functions as well.

Its just a brilliant move by Sony as they can now focus on the hardware (which they are better at) and leave the software OS to Google and just provide the better margin content which they own a ton of from music to movies to games.

Sony is not an OS builder and frankly they are not great at it. Google is a great software maker and Android is phenominal and gets better with each release. To see that seamless transition between all Sony devices, TVs, smaller computers, phones, media players, and of course game machines is perfect and best for end user as it provides comfortable surroundings and less of a learning curve.

So, what's happening is Sony is still a 1st party dev, but the area where they would be considered 3rd party is going to expand as its going to include many Android capable devices.
