MCV jumped the gun completely on this shit.  Voice control for non-english languages is what will not be available at launch.

Which is simply not acceptable at all... This feature should be ready for every market

Well seeing as most likely 3/4 of Xbox users speak English it is very acceptable.

Yeah, fuck the rest of the world, as long as the majority get what they want, the minority doesn't matter at all.

OT: That's pretty good news, though I still think they should postpone the launch. They have some bugs they can work out and they could probably have a larger launch if it wasn't releasing alongside heaps of games and other hardware.

Like Netflix?  Last.fm?  ESPN?

There is lots of stuff that is only available to a portion of the Xbox userbase.

How about games released only in Japan?  Do you think companies shouldn't be allowed to release those until they are localized into every other countries language and released worldwide?

Ummm, Kinect is a piece of hardware. The whole voice command thing is one of it's main selling points. It's like if PS3's in Japan had PSN, but PS3's in Australia didn't. If your going to release something, then your better off waiting until everything's sorted out and every customer can start on an equal footing.

Ummm, Xbox 360 is a piece of hardware.  Netflix, Last.fm and ESPN were big selling points during the last couple of E3s yet they are only available in the US.

You proved nothing with your point.  Hardware or software, sometimes not every region will get all the features that other regions might.  Besides, the voice control for stuff like movie control still works.  I don't care where you are from you can learn to say "Xbox stop.  Xbox play."

Also, please explain to me why it's better for Microsoft for them to wait?

They wouldn't even have to learn how to say xbox.  As far as I know its called xbox everywhere its sold no matter if its china, japan, france, germany or the united states etc...   So basically all they need to learn to say is start stop forward back and off.  I know more words than that in spanish and I have never taken a spanish class.   So its not like its a deal breaker by any means.

Decisions are still probably being made about what will and will not be included at launch.

My guess is that there will be some limited voice control -- because there would be too much complaining (as well as investigating) if there were not.

This makes no sense.  AFAIK the voice recognition is being done using software that Microsoft has had for years and is using in the current versions of Windows.  It's not like they developed this just for Kinect.  Why do you think it all of a sudden doesn't work?  Do you think all the videos and demonstrations have been fake?

Microsoft fake a presentation ... never. /sarcasm.  (Microsoft invented "smoke and mirrors" demos).

Any recognition software with which I have ever worked has required "training" the software to recognize the speaker's voice (or person's hand writing).   The issue becomes whether or not the average Kinect user will be able to have their comments recognized.

By limited, I meant a small vocabulary or a small set of languages recognized. Remember, this is not a product for one country or specialized places. In Europe, it would have to recognize English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Dutch, etc.  So that will not be a small task -- and could explain the confusion over voice recognition on what will be implemented and what will not be.

If you expect Kinect to be fully fluent in every language at launch, ...

You've never called a company and had to use voice commands to navigate the automated messages?  Did it require training to understand you?

There is a big difference between having to have the computer type exact words that you are speaking and the computer only needing to understand the gist of what you're saying.   Many of the demos that were shown that allowed full sentence communication, such as Milo, were not only using your words but also the tonality of your voice to gauge what you were trying to say.  As far as I know there were no demos shown using complete sentences where ever word needed to be recognized.

I don't expect it being fluent in every language at all, I thought you were talking about it being limited even in English.

It understood me just fine without training at the Kinect Demo in Canton OH.  As long as you don't need to use complete sentences your fine.  Ever used a phone where everything is automated?  They work well in English and Spanish so I don't see where any training is needed for basic operations.

The Kinect obviously isn't ready? The thing barely works at acceptable standards, the launch lineup is absolutely ridiculous, alot of the promises they made at last years E3 has yet to be implemented and I'm sorry If I care more about a quality product than I do about the Microsoft VGCHartz circle jerk in the sales thread.

I don't agree with your other opinion, so I won't reply to it as I've already explained my opinion in the thread. I barely said anything negative about Microsoft and people came jumping at me, whatever, I've learnt that my opinion is a better one in comparison to the biased people on this forum.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

He saw that video of Japanese girls playing it. What more does he need to see?
