Forums - Gaming - Eurogamer: New PSP has touch screen controls

Sony's current vision for the next-generation PlayStation Portable is roughly the same size as the PSP-3000 and has touch controls on the reverse of the unit.

According to three separate development sources who have seen and used the new PSP, the screen is rich and detailed but the headline feature is the way games are controlled - by a touch-sensitive area on the back of the unit behind the screen.

Sony is showcasing the unfinished handheld to publishers at the moment using several first-party games and has already settled on its business model for the device, which was not shown to the public at gamescom this week.

One source told us he expects it to launch by the end of 2011, although another was less convinced, believing we won't see anything for at least a couple of years. Sony has not specified when it will release a successor to the current platform.

It's thought that Sony considered a disc-based storage solution for the new PSP, but has since decided against it following developer feedback. Flash media support, similar to the PSPgo, seems most likely.

Sony told Eurogamer it "does not comment on rumour and speculation".

Interesting, but hardly concrete. I'll wait for more solid stuff before I start to look at this with interest. I'm up for PSP2 if it gives me the following:

  • Cheap games like iStore.
  • A phone.
  • A hi-def video camera.
  • Apps.

Basically, I need it to be a smart-phone to attract my attention nowadays. I already have an iPhone, and it's pretty much replaced my mobile gaming needs because of it's utilitarian approach. Sure, the games are potentially much, much worse, but I can live with that for everything else I get. I'll be damned if I'll carry around two portable devices, especially when the PSP is so chunky (well, the decent one is). So, I'd be looking for something to replace my iPhone, not work in tandem with it.

I honestly think that if Sony dont' release the PSP2 by Christmas 2011, it will stand no chance against the 3DS at all

I have been waiting for a psp2. I like what the psp offers, but the entire time i've been interested in it I think the psp2 is around the coroner.

Eeeeeew. First 3D glasses, and now this. Sony is completely out of touch with reaility.

I bought a PSP before I got a DS. Sony has a mountaint to climb in order to convince me to do that again. The fact that the 3DS is launching first is a very bad sign.

Touch controls on the BACK??????????!!!!!!!!!!!

wtf......

Yes, the touch screen controls have to be on the back.

Apple if I am not mistaken has a patent on screen touch controls. Sony would be looking at a multi-hundred or billion dollar lawsuit if they were front screen touch screen.

Here is the link on Apple acquiring the touch screen patent from January 26, 2009:

Google "Apple patent touch screen" if the link scares you.

FTR I believe the DS also launched before the PSP.
