I think is goes back into what Sir howie was wanting to do. make a more unified software across all their product's. it seem's Sony has decided on Android to be that software for many of their product's.
it does not hurt to have someone there like
Tim Schaaff
Appointed last December as Sony's (SNE) new senior vice-president for software development, Schaaff has control over design, intellectual property, licensing, and product planning and engineering.
he reports directly to Kaz
so it's not unheard of Tim to support open standards
"Schaaff's record of backing industry standards at Apple suggests he'll prod Sony toward a similar position."
of course
That dovetails with Stringer's plans to get Sony to embrace industrywide formats and make its gizmos more compatible with other companies.
Android is a pretty good choice, and since Sir. Howie also, with Bert
Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg says will focus on Android

In the past, there was no tie-up between us [Sony Ericsson], the PSP platform and Sony, but you can expect to hear much more about that. Sir Howard Stringer’s [chairman of Sony] presence here is no coincidence.”
