I don't want this comment to come off as negative, but I'm just wondering what it is that is pushing PS3 sales so much in Japan recently. Software wise it has been mostly DS/PSP, and some Wii games. I know this week is a holiday but with only 1 game in the top 20, yet it still got a nice size holiday boost. Are there just tons of PS3 games outside the top 20 selling a few thousand each week that are pushing PS3 sales or have the multimedia functions of the system become more popular, or is it something else?

I think the new SKUS, especially the white model have helped sales in Japan

I'm still shocked that PS3 beats the Wii in Japan, considering Wii seems to have a lot more types of games that appeal to the Japanese crowd these days. I guess it's just reached its saturation point.

What? the PS3 has had  a much more steady lineup than the Wii. If anything im surprised the wii still levels off at 20k.

Wii is cheaper this year than last year though

So is the PS3 :P but the PS3 is having a bit of a Euphoria of software these past 8 months... however it looks like it will stop right around the holidays

ATM it looks that way but who knows what could be announced at TGS.

Proudest Platinums:
1. Gran Turismo 5
2. Persona 4 Arena
3. Wipeout HD
4. Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
5. Super Street Fighter 4

I love seeing Sony with nice Hardware sales but seriously I would like to see a few more games make the software list

I think PS3 in 2011 looks solid-ish, at least for tentpole games (Ninokuni, FFvsXIII, FFXIV, MVC3, SFxT/TxSF, MGS Rising, TLG, etc).   Comparably Wii really only has 3 standouts (Zelda SS, Mario Sports and DQX) though they're all arguably bigger than most/all of PS3's games.  360 meanwhile gets the multiplats, the niche shmup/galgames and The Idom@ster 2.

What's looking really barren in 2011 though is DS/PSP.  DS has literally nothing and PSP has just Agito, and that's nearly vaporware at this point.  3DS is really sucking all the oxygen out of the room, I think it's going to kill JP development entirely on DS/PSP/Wii within it's first year.  The HD twins will get by with engine recycled sequels somewhat, but expect a lot of original games that would've normally gone to them head to 3DS instead too.

I think the first few months will be decisive for the 3DS. If it starts well devs will massively jump on it. Combine it with no competition from Sony/MS, and we might be getting an awesome line-up of games. Hopefully, Nintendo won't become arrogant again and doesn't ask too much royalties.

I'd say 3rd parties are already jumping on board 3DS wholesale.  I haven't seen this much unanimous support prelaunch since PS2.

I'd also say the memory of N64 has driven about all Nintendo's recent decisions.  Iwata's Nintendo seems a whole lot friendlier to 3rd parties than any iteration of the company before imo... I mean really, I'd say we've seen more Nintendo collaborations with 3rd parties this gen than in their entire previous history, and also more than we've seen out of Sony/MS comparably.

PS3 and 360 seem pretty safe for the time being though imo, what 3DS is really going to impact upfront is DS/PSP/Wii, and I'd argue it already has...
