Forums - Sony - Why no Price cut?

The 120gb and 160gb ps3 are the same price right now. According to vgchartz sony still has 2 million units on store shelves. How can the 120gb possibly sell out when you can get a larger hard drive for the same price. Either sony is crazy or vgcharts numbers might be a little off. What do you guys think?

This. Personally I don't have any other explanation :/

Well, either sony expects the consumer to think "wow the 120gb is a great purchase even though the 160gb ps3 is sitting right next to it!"

or there aren't many 120gb ps3s in stock to justify a price cut since the 160gb is shipping right now..

because 38.1M as of JUNE sure is a large number, and stuffing their channels with $299 120gb PS3s isn't ganna do much for them

Because Sony's presentation was for Europe and not necesarilly the world and it was concerned with letting out news of new skus. The old skus will be discounted by the retailers in a few days.

This same thing happenned when they first had new skus replacing the original units, I think when the 40/80gb models launched? It was a day or so before retailers showed lower prices. This is just how they do it when they are changing minor features vs when there is a real price drop or the slim model was releasing.

I don't have time or the want to search for it, but I distinctly remember when the 1st change in skus came around it was a day before Sony said older skus would get a discount.

No retailer will keep the 120 at the same price as the 160 as these newer models start to be advertised and fully enter the market. The 120 and 250 will be discounted, may not get Sony marketing campaign as it will be done at the retailer level, but it will happen.

Depends on the current margins of which I have no idea. But, I'd expect $30-50 off each the 120 and 250s remaining in the supply chain.

if there aren't many 120GB models in stock at retail, there is no reason to cut the price on sony's side of things..

and I do not expect a price cut of any sort..

also the first SKU CHANGE was the 60GB to 80GB bundle

the 60GB dropped to $499 cut by sony themselves, and the 80GB with motorstorm was announced for $599, then they announced the 40gb, and sony cut the price of the 80gb with motorstorm to $499 and the 40gb launched at $399.

The only time THEY ANNOUNCED retailer could cut price was in japan earlier this month
