Just came up with an awesome idea (IMO).

Here's the premise: Take the classic 2d beat 'em up genre seen in games like Fatal Fury, Streets of Rage, Castle Crashers, and Scott Pilgrim. From there, infuse all the elements of modern 3d action games like DMC, Ninja Gaiden, GoW, and Bayonetta into the game. In other words, upgradeable weapons/skills, sick combos, all the stuff that makes killing (or beating up) people look cool.

Throw in some co-op and double-team abilities and I think you've got a winner.

It's called River City Ransom, it was made in 1989, and it inspired the Scott Pilgrim comic book and the game!  It just has sick special moves instead of sick combos.  But it's practically a beat-'em-up/RPG, with leveling, upgradeable stats that you can choose how to upgrade, skills you can learn, and items you can collect.  Any weapon or enemy you can pick up and throw at another enemy or off a cliff, or you can beat an enemy to death with his own henchman.  It even has passwords so you can save all your character stats and come back later.  You could save your character's stats and I could save mine, so we could play co-op later.  But this was back on the NES, so the passwords were crazy long walls of alphanumerics.

Game's by Technos.  They made it right after Double Dragon.  It's on the Virtual Console.  It's probably my favorite NES game, or at least in the top 3.

But yes, that's STILL an awesome idea.  I don't know why we don't have any more games like that.  I've been waiting 21 years... and counting... you could do so much more with the genre now... make it 4 player co-op, throw in some vehicles.  There was a sequel that was only in Japan, that took place in feudal Japan.  You could pick up a rickshaw, and I could jump on it, and then you could beat somebody to death with the rickshaw while I'm still standing on top of it and throwing weapons, or punching and kicking, or jumpkicking off of it.  Or you could just roll me around in a rickshaw.  If they threw in bikes, skateboards, jetpacks, volcanoes, cars with spikes and guns, and just upgraded the combat to have combos, it would probably be the best game ever.  It's almost too easy to make a game that awesome, but I guess devs want to challenge themselves by trying to make nazis and aliens new and hip and interesting...

Oh I already know all about River City Ransom, I'm just saying there's so much room for VAST improvement within the genre. We're talking sick-looking combos, grapples, throws, as well as all the special moves. Plus you've got all the weapons to use... mmm. I doubt I'd approve of vehicles in small arenas, but hey, Bart rode a skateboard in the Simpsons arcade game. :p

Oh okay.  We're totally on the same page then.  If I had a ton of money I'd be giving you a greenlight and a big bag of money with a dollar sign on it right about now.

Oh no this thread's giving me the green problem!  It keeps staying green and telling me there are new posts!  But there are none!  IT WILL DRIVE ME INSANE!  I have to keep clicking and looking for new ideas!

I was listening to the Heavy Rain soundtrack when I got this idea.

Now, I know a shit load of people CONSTANTLY say, Oh, what if you take X game/genre and make it huge like GTA!! But what about if you have a detective game in a GTA shell? I'm not talking just that you're playing a cop in GTA. There's a difference between just being directed to your objectives, and having to find out yourself.

So what I'm saying is that let's say you find a origami in a crime scene. Instead of like in GTA, where you're told: Go to the Origami shop (minimap expands and shows origami symbol), you have to be smart and figure it out yourself.

So the gameplay consists of this:

1) Evidence gathering gameplay like in Heavy Rain, except without the glasses.

2) Evidence finding gameplay like in Heavy Rain, except less limited and guiding. For instance, to find the origami shop, you'll have to google or yellow page up the shop. Rather than the character just automatically pulling up the map, and finding it.

3) Action/chase scenes/Suspense momments/etc. This is where the GTA gameplay is.

You can have lots of side missions, like GTA, by going to mission (crime scene) and solving it. I'm thinking that you can mandate completetion of these side missions, by having supplmentary clues pop up with them.
