Back in April I made a thread about wanting to play other Final Fantasy games after I got FF13 and really liked it. Based on reccomendations I got FF12 (decent), FF10 (great). Then I was given PSN vouchers for my birthday recently, I'm not a big playstation gamer, so I don't have many games for the PS3, I'm not interested in many PSN games either. But I saw FF7, FF8 and FF9 on PSN so I went ahead and got all three of them.

FF7 was an excellent game, so far so good. It took a while to complete and the side missions, extra's were fun, story had a hook all the way through, characters and villain were compelling. It was worth the money.

Then I started FF8...oh the horror. Fine it starts of with a flashy CGI sequence, great music. But many hours in the plot I realised that it lacked any kind of hook, it felt like going from loosely related events to the next one. The characters are awful, and what the hell is wrong with squall, such people won't be classified as mentally sane from where I come from, neither would Rinoa.I almost just gave up when I found out Laguna was a man, not a girl, but it turns out he's a good character so I continued. The game is just so boring. And the writing is awful, I thought FF10 and FF13 had terrible sappy scripts, this game was much worse.

Next the gameplay was awful, the entire idea of having to fight enemies to be able to get magic is annoying, not to mention how boring it is to just fight and spam draw on enemies and then kill them. The junction system, hell the menu's in the game are convoluted as hell. The summons take ridiculously long to attack and are overpowered. The materia system was perfect, there was no need to make the system so stupid. The entire system makes no sense whatsoever, and if this game is meant to be a love story its even more ridiculous, there is no connection between squall or rinoa yet.

So I hate the plot, characters and the gameplay is terrible. I am on disc 2 at the moment. Does the game get a hell of a lot better, I mean a hell of a lot better? Or should I move onto FF9? FF9 better not be anything like this.

No it stay that way for the rest of the game.

FF9 is much better so far, glad I moved on.

Glad you think so. I'm currently replaying it, loving every second of it (though I just hit Fossil Roo, so that might change).

The soundtrack is really phenomenal.

FF9 is superior to FF8 in every way.

Except setting and the bare-bones storyline (lol @ love story crap)

Yes, I consider FF9 to have better characters than FF8.

definitely continue with FF8, its the best of the pre ps2 FF's IMO

Though 8, 10 and X-2 are all considered to be the 'girls games' of the ff's

9 is my least fave FF (though still a good game) if you move on prepare for an extreme lightening of the story, To this day it still seems to be to be about as serious as watching something like 'shrek' imo, better to play 4, 5 or 6 than 9, they have all the good points of it and none of the bad

as FF is possibly the most subjective subject ever, this is solely my opinion, take it or leave it

IX is a great game precisely because it doesn't take itself too seriously.

I mean yes that's why FFIX is so unique and good, but you can take yourself not seriously and still have a good story, and it didn't have a good story. But Deus Ex is a Masterpiece. And it doesn't really have a great plot and it takes itself very seriously. So you like only not serious games? :P

I prefer Melodies of Life. I think it has a better beat and the lyrics actually make some sense. Well not much, but still more than Eyes on Me.
