They are a part of a registered company in the UK.
Their legitimacy is proven by an unrelated forum known as EXCEEM in which there is a forum board (like Nintendo, MS, Sony, Gaming over here) called "I got my free item" where users post a picture of their free item.
To get your free gift, you have to sign up and complete an offer. Then you have to refer 11 more people to do the same for you. But truth be told, it can be an extreme pain in the ass to get these referrals (I know from experience).

Though they are free, these offers require credit cards. Reason being Lovefilm/Gamefly are a rental company, and if you are able to simply sign up and rent DVDs, people might decide to keep the DVDs. Intuit/Equifax charges your Credit Card once the trial period is over (Kinda like seller accounts on ebay...it needs your payment details though they won't charge your account immediately)
