Alpha Protocol was made by Obsidian, the group that (for me) best challenges BioWare for the WRPG crown.
Obsidian is made up of people from the now-defunct...
Wait for it....

| Mr Khan said: That was the first thing that came to my mind. BioWare's been riding this high on Mass Effect and Dragon Age recently that gives them the aura of being the developer with the Midas touch, but Sonic Chronicles was a bad game by any standard. The only thing good in it was the core battle mechanics (that made good use of the touchscreen and formed a surprisingly cunning strategy), and everything else was butchery. Horrendous cutscenes that looked like they were made by someone who didn't really understand Flash all that well, an atrocious story even by Sonic standards which completely jumped the shark midway through when they sent everyone out to outer space adventure with random aliens, and just an overall incredibly bland and generic game-world. BioWare was able to dodge that flop somehow, not taking a lot of heat for it. But it definitely proves that there are dregs in that group. |
In fairness, the majority of developers don't take absurd amounts of heat for releasing one bad game every once in a while.
Conker: Live & Reloaded
I hoped for a Conker's Bad Fur Day experience with better graphics and got the first taste of Rares fading quality.
It's not a really bad game per se, but a mere shadow compared to what Rare once was capable of.
Tempus fugit Nintendo manet.

True, but i feel that none of the blame for that game was laid at BioWare's feet, and none of the disappointment attributed to them. That's more what i meant. They put that out, but nobody ever really thinks of it as "the one crappy BioWare game," just as "another crappy Sonic game."
Maybe because most people ignored the game's existence and it wasn't hyped very much, idk.

I'm one of those BioWare faithful. You've.... actually convinced me to find someone who has a copy of the game so I can borrow it. I kind of want to see the train wreck.

it's not really all that much of a train wreck. For a ds RPG, it is ok. It is an average game, which shows in the reviews of the game. That is why nobody really talks about it, it didn't get horrendous reviews like this article is talking about, just average. Now, if they had made alpha protocol, then they would probably be getting some crap.

This article isn't necessarily about total garbage put out by excellent developers, more about games that were disappointing for who made them. Oni is more mediocre than horrid, and Sonic Chronicles falls into the same category. I mean, i played the game through, it's not unbearable, mostly because the actual RPG mechanics are pretty solid, but for a developer who's otherwise known for such masterful storytelling, literature-level character development, and engaging worlds, you have a game that meets none of those categories whatsoever.
Actually, character development is okay, if only because of Shade, but i'm a Knuckles fan at heart, so of course i was going to like Shade, but the story is a train-wreck, if only for the jumped shark in the middle that leads to the incomprehensible second half.
