Think that figure may be a little off though, britney may have been 2% of exports or 2% of a state economy, US economy in total is like 700 trillion per year so 2% would make her bigger than the whole music industry over many many years,

also believe it or not, gaga is still known as a 'cult' artist in the popular crowd simply because shes so weird as a person, at least where I live, I am a total club/party girl and Gaga is way too out there for a lot of my friends whereas britney had universal appeal, she just identified with us better, Gaga has too many ideals and is too critical of us image conscious ones

American economy is 14.5 trillion, not 700 trillion... WW economy is just 60 trillion.

 

Anyway, Britney is product, GaGa is an artist. But Britney has loads of secondary products, including her perfumes, that sells much more than her albums. She already sold 800 million perfumes and only 100 million albums.

I think Britney was bigger, I dont like any of them though.

Goes to show how you can be succesful by targeting teen girls even if everyone else hates you.

Yep, their album Millennium sold 30 million copies worldwide (this is apparently what teenage girls spent their money on in the 90s).

I don't know a lot about Lady Gaga but I at least know a good deal about Glee.

In the Glee episode that does a tribute to Lady Gaga, they wear costumes designed by her costume designer, not Lady Gaga.  That makes me think someone else has control over Lady Gaga's image and she really is just as manufactured as someone like Brittney Spears...

If it is true that Britney Spears was responsible for 2% of the 14.5 Trillion dollar US economy would be ~300 billion dollars she was responsible for. At 15 bucks a pop, Britney Spears probably sold 20 billion albums. At a population of 6.5 billion: that means every human being in the world, from infants to great grandmothers bought Britney Spears first album three times that year. I don't remember buying the album (or her being anywhere near that successful), but I would say that with those numbers Britney Spears is thousands of times more popular than Lady Gaga.

To be fair, when Brittany Spears came on the scene people actually bought albums so that could be a large reason for such a difference. 

Doesn't really make a difference since they're both pretty bad.
