Oh the topic of government takeover of internet....

In the small town I live close too, 5 years ago we got 5mbit service, a few years ago we got 20, this year, we got 40.

If the government had put in that 5mbit line, we would be stuck with it for another 10 years most likely.

As for me, I live in the middle of nowhere, so my choices are limited.

I pay $70 a month for a wireless 3mbit connection. If I didn't want that, the next best option for me is a 256k DSL.

The down side of living in the country, but it's fast enough for Netflix.

I didn't say anything about the Government providing the connection, more the Government providing the subsidies required for the firms to unlock the potentials of the social benefits that a private corporation couldn't possibly fathom with the current model of doing business.

Subsidies, not the whole thing. SO it is still in the best interest of companies to make the broadband better, and as long as they do so they will get money from the government to help them out.

Not takeover, just prodding. Say if you want to provide broadband, either stick to these standards or get out of the industry. Ultimately internet is something even my borderline-communist thinking isn't entirely comfortable with government providing, as i like the auspices of competition there (also with television)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

EDIT got 10.15 mb dl and 0.68 mb up

My ISP already gets government subsidies for being a rural provider, so what you want to happen is happening.

All rural telco's get government aid. If they didn't, there wouldn't be any.
