Why show 2009 for Xbox 360? I recall someone observing (in disparaging tones) that on a particular week after 360s released the PS3 "didn't even manage to sell more than XBox 360 in 2009". So I wanted to see what PS3 2010 sales were like against 360 2009 at this time of year to see if that disparaging observation had any merit in relation to the launch of the 360s.

As you can see PS3 weekly sales have actually gone up since 360s released, this is probably because the 360s launch seems to have coincided with supply constraints no longer being in effect for PS3. The unknown is whether PS3 would have enjoyed an even bigger weekly lift without 360s. I suspect it would have, but it's pure conjecture to say so. Also it seems on average 360 2009 > PS3 2010 most of the time, so it's not a particularly noteworthy observation on any given week, except for those who want to troll. The 360 2009 : PS3 2010 ratio basically hasn't changed. Overall there doesn't seem to have been any effect on PS3 sales thus far. More weeks will tell, and 360s Arcade release is yet to come.
There appears to be an effect on Wii sales. But I can't quite figure out the 5 week period leading up to 19 June where Wii sales were particularly high. SMG2 launched in the middle of that 5 week period so it can't be down to that. Were there supply constraints that came off for Wii on WE 15 May? If so then the jump in sales would artificially inflate the pre 360s/clearance sale Wii sales. But even taking that into account I reckon clearance sale 360 & 360s has negatively affected Wii sales.
You can also see that the Wii : PS3 sales ratio has dropped markedly between over the same period. Looking only at PS3 sales one might conclude that there is a lot of 360 upgrading / buying of a 2nd or 3rd console for the house going on. But looking at Wii, it may be that some people who were thinking about Wii have gone with 360.
If there's a case to be made for any 360 competitors to try to counter act it would seem Wii is in the greatest need. Time will tell if PS3 sales stay on track or if 360 momentum does start eating in to PS3 sales.
