It's also the one country out of all the main markets that is significantly culturally different.
I'm not going to say that there aren't other factors resulting in low sales for the 360 in Japan but as I mentioned in an earlier post, when the PS3 has exclusives such as Yakuza, MGS and Final Fantasy are you really surprised the PS3 is by far their HD console of choice?

Well that clearly doesn't work the other way around in the West so I'm not sure why you'd expect it to be the case over there. Although the 360 does now have a wider library which also caters towards the Japanese market, when games like FFXIII, Yakuza and MGS and exclusive to the PS3 which HD console do you really expect them to buy? |
When games like Halo, Gears of War and Fable are exclsuive to the 360, which HD console do you really expect Americans to buy?
Sure MS has a few Japanese games, but they are nowhere near as big as the ones you mentioned in Japan. E.g. Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey.
So does Sony for the Western audience, but they are nowhere near as big as the one I mentioned. E.g. Uncharted, Killzone or Resistance.
Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

I expect Americans to buy the 360, I don't think I said otherwise?

no you hit the nail on the head... japanese buy japanese. (apart for a VERY few notable exceptions) |
I see what you did there!
Yes those games are made in Japan but they are very popular franchises which have been around for years so again, it's not surprising to continue to see them sell well and shift consoles.
These games are designed for a Japanese audience where as Gears and Halo are designed for a Western audience and so we see each sell far better in their respective regions.
Again, I'm not going to pretend there isn't any national issue involved but you really can't deny that a PS3 is far more suited to Japan than the 360 can you (for the same reasons the 360 is more suited to the West)?

I remember in 2008 people boasting the 360 was dead and going to drop below 1000 units in Japan. Sure the numbers aren't amazing in Japan but the decline in Japan's numbers is usually quite steady for the 360 historically and the performance this year isn't its worse I believe.

Well that would be a miracle if they could maintain 4-6k, that way it would mean people who maybe are still on Wii, handhelds or maybe just dont have an HD system will have an inexpensive pption.
