Forums - General - Anime fans: English subtitles or English Voiceovers?

I would necessarily call myself an anime fan but I do hate subtitles. I hate reading my shows and I hate missing out on things because I'm reading the damn show.

Plus I don't know Japanese so there is no point in trying to sense thier emotion.  For me It's pointless.

IT depends on the show for me.

I hate english voice overs. The mouthing doesn't match, and they put in lame jokes in there. There's no emotion in the voice and it's mostly just reading the script. I like the original voicing and since it's original, it really brings out what the artist wants to convey. Subtitles over voicing, any day.

Currently loving my Wii x2, Xbox 360 Pro & Xbox 360 Arcade, and Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Limited "Cloud Black" 160GB PS3

GAMEFLY & GOOZEX FTW

Mostly I prefer subs. English Dubs are very often disappointing and feel less dramatic. The Original Japanese voices usually get the tones and intonations right.

There are a couple of different English Dubs I prefer however, mostly cuz I was introduced to the anime with those voices. Shows like Trigun, Inuyasha, Naruto (I haven't heard the Japanese version yet), Full Metal Alchemist, and just a few others...

Other shows like Evangelion and Love Hina are only watched in Japanese. Most Anime is best watched in Japanese with subs.

Remember that subtitles aren't always perfect either...some things get lost in translation...and they do change jokes and stuff to things that English-speakers understand, etc.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Yup. But if they can't write the joke in english, they probably can't translate it correctly with the voice too. After watching many anime, I can understand some of their expressions already so the original japanese voice with subtitles works out better for me. I haven't had too much trouble with bad subs...yet. :D

Subs all the way.

Nothing's cheaper than something free.

F1 vs FOTA, when too much power is in couple peoples hands.

When shows don't get official subs right away, a lot of fansubs come out, and expectedly, they're not perfect.

But of course, it's the only option.

Don't get me wrong, I prefer subs to dubs almost all the time.  And I never watch dubbed live action movies...it's so annoying.
