Forums - General - Anime fans: English subtitles or English Voiceovers?

I don't know about some of you, but when it comes to anime, I have to watch the english subtitle (japanese voiceovers) versions over anything else. How about you? Is it the same, or do you actually like english voiceovers?

There is only one anime that I would watch with english voiceovers and that would be Cowboy Bebop. Thats about it.

English subs definitely. There is no other way.

I like the dubs. I've gotten used to all the voice actors voices over the years. I can usually tell who they are just by listening.

Subs all the way, but I must admit spanish voicecovers sometimes are actually good(Dragon Ball, Samurai X, Cowboy Bebop, Saint seiya)

Well, I wont need any subs once I finish learning Japanese. Just from watching anime itself I can pick up on a lot. But after my formal teachings this year, I can watch Raw files. Especially after I go live in Japan =]

Subs... I prefer to listen to anything (anime, movies, tv...) with their original (voice) actors.

In anime voiceovers are fine with me as long as they're done well. Most of the best anime movies have good english voice work. In live action films I prefer subtitles for two reasons: The words don't fit the faces, which distracts me from the film, and I like the original voices because they add more depth to the acting. Subtle things like tone don't carry over so well in dubbing. The exception there is if the actors do their own voice overs.

I know you believe you understand what you think I said but I don't think you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Depends on the quality of the voice acting.

That said, sometimes I like to do english subtitles even with english voice overs... Sometimes the two translations are way different....

Depends on the show.

I've watched tons of anime and I can honestly say that there are a fair number of English dubtitles that show up their Japanese counterparts.  There is also the latter.   Listen to both whenever possible and then make a judgment.

It's usually hit or miss, depending on who the voice actors are. I can't stand to watch Bleach now, I feel like ripping my ear drums out listening to the English cast.

Ghost in the Shell, however, has decent english voiceovers and same goes for Samurai Champloo. Everything else is terrible.
