Forums - General - French Parliament Votes To Ban The Burka

From your interpretations of the Koran? I didn't realise that you were a reader of holy scriptures, FootballFan.

But, in any regard, it's just another curbing of civil liberties in the name of "security". Except, it isn't. It's just a vote winning policy for a struggling Government.

This is not about public safety.  It is about specifically targeting Muslim women to drive Muslims out of France.   Well I am not in France, so France can do whatever it is going to do, but I feel the policy is wrong.

And it is things like this that lead militant Muslim fundamentalists to justify their war against the West.

The law exist in Belgium and for sure did not drive muslims out of Belgium..Contrary the muslim population increased

Looks like I got an idea what to wear at Halloween.

Anyway I don't see how this jeprodises safety in anyway, if my mum wore a burka (which she doesn't) and police officials told her to reveal her identity she would do it right at the spot. So I don't see how this is a problem, I would think any sane person would take revealing their identity then to face charges by refusing an order from the police.

Also can you post any crimes within the EU that was instigated by women wearing the burka?

also, are they going to ban Nuns from wearing their dress? no, of course not, because nuns are normally white christians.

Members of the French parliament voted 335-1 in favour of the burka ban. Also out of those 336 members, 4 are Muslims. So, it would appear, that some Muslims are oppose to the Burka.

When in Rome....do as the Romans do. It is up to the minority of Muslims to adjust to France rather than France adjust to a minority of Muslims.

Dude.. there are 577 members... 241 members refused vote...

Lets imagine that ALL those 241 happened vote against. That would still result in defeat. News just coming in...

You missed something from the quote "but it has expressed concern that the law will stigmatise Muslims in general"

isn't a bit paradoxal by upholding the European values of liberalism and tolerance by restricting the right of women to choose to dress as they wish, in accordance with their beliefs? with this law they create a bigger problem then there is..

I think their are way bigger problems than this for the muslims;..As an Dutch citizen you should be familiar with one of them...'Geert Wilders'

First off, this blatantly isn't about public safety, the burka has been singly pointed out. It's obviously targeting muslims.

I agree with Sarkozy when he says "The veil hurts the dignity of women", but in that case don't ban the burka. All that does is take away a woman's right to wear the religious clothing of her choice... But that's exactly the point, her choice.

Many Muslim women don't have the choice, they are forced to wear the burka by male relatives or husband. If you want to ban something, then ban people from forcing others to wear religious clothing.

Forcing women to not wear the burka would be just as bad as those forcing those same women to wear the burka.

Not sure my idea would have much effect though.

I agree with your sentiments. It's a positive effort at cultural change, but ultimately its means stray too far from what is acceptable.

Oddly reminiscent of the Arizona immigration law. Right idea, but questionable execution.

I think quoting Geert Wilders doesn't do you any favours.
