Banning the burkha is un-British says UK governement.

"Telling people what they can and can't wear, if they're just walking down the street, is a rather un-British thing to do,"

"Britain is a free country. We value our freedoms and we don't want MPs or the government telling British citizens what they can or can't wear."

Shame, the government doesn't listen to the vast majority of the citizens. In a recent Yougov poll 67.2% of people in the UK want the Burka banned.

I would argue it that the Burka is "un-British"

I imagine any country not in the middle east wants the Burka banned.

I don't think banning the burka is the way to go about it, but if it got banned in Egypt and Turkey I'm inclined to think there must be something seriously wrong about it...

If it's about women oppression, and this oppression is widespread, perhaps it would be better to work from that angle. Oppression of any kind should not be allowed in Europe.

I think if the burka got banned I really wouldn't lose sleep over it, in the end this is a secular nation so if it did get banned we should just respect it as that is what the majority of the citizens wants.

I do not live there and don't ever want to wear one, it is a secular nation but the people are supposed to have the freedom of speech and religion.  The secular part only comes into play when you are talking about things like schools, not walking down a public street.  You can't force people to be secular in public places and claim you have the freedoms they say they do. This is a culture war, plain and simple.  They don't want the Muslims to leave, they want them to force them to be more like the French while still milking their cheap labor.

I find the arguments about equality the most interesting.

The idea that has been proposed, that if somebody can see your face but theirs is hidden behind a veil is a breach if equality, is very intriguing to me.

syria just banned face veils in universities.  i guess they hate muslims too.

It's not about racism, it's about freedom.  It doesn't really matter if it is a burka or a naruto headband.

None of its about racism.

Islam is a religion and not a race. You choose to be of a certain religious faith, or you're indoctrinated from birth. It however can be changed or all faith can be rejected completely (such as I have done). Race can't be changed, isn't a belief system and makes no claims about anything.

the burka ban is stupid.

1) it wont punish the people who force the women to wear them

2) some of them chose to wear them

3) we are telling them that being oppressed by men is wrong, so the police can oppress there right to wear the thing, or worse yet, they are being forced so we punsih them not the person forcing them to wear it
