Forums - Gaming - Great SRPG's that aren't Fire Emblem?

Ogre Battle 64 can be best described as '60 hours of win'

I find it quite ironic that the N64 had my favourite RPG of the 5th generation, despite only having two RPGs worth mentioning.  Ogre Battle isn't like other S-RPGs,  there is no grid system (except for battles) and is real time (again except for battles), it has an amazing lengthy story, it truly shows how much 3rd parties could really squeeze into an N64 cartridge if they tried.

It's the best 1200 Wii points I have ever spent, yes better than Sin and Punishment.

isn't valkyria chronicles a SRPG?

Aha! A thread which I have a strong interest in as I am also looking to find good console SRPGs

Xxain first of all since it looks like you have a PS3, as a few other people have mentioned I have to strongly recommend Valkyria Chronicles.

I think it ticks all your boxes as it is a console game, has no grinding at all, if units fall in battle and you can't reach them with a teammate they are gone for good - and it has a fantastic story.

I always hated RPGs for being random battle grind-fests and VC was the first SRPG I played and loved it.

I subsequently recommended it to a friend who also enjoyed it and said it reminded him of Fire Emblem: Path of Radience. (I have yet to play any of the FE games but I want to try Path of Radience next)

Another recommendation I can make is Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 - in case your not familiar with the series I would best describe it as 50% SRPG and 50% Dating Sim where the dataing sim part of the game substitues the normal grinding you would have to do.

I have also recently played/tried a few PSP SRPGs.

Jeanne D'arc - which I enjoyed.

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness - which I didn't like and gave up after an hour

FF Tactics - which I hated after 10 minutes and gave up

It does not seem like anyone has any feedback on Agarest... would be good to know if this is worth a shot but a quick look at Metacritic and I suspect it won't be.

As much as I love P4, I would have to recommend against it in terms of this thread. It is not a SRPG, it's a JRPG that requires some strategy. It also goes against the core rule that the op is looking for, namely, a dead character is dead. This is the first game I would recommend to someone wanting a RPG, or even a different type of RPG, but for a strategy game? Eh...

Regarding ones I'd recommend, unfortunately, I've been looking for some myself, and none of them seem to have me as happy as Fire Emblem. I will agree with the recommendations on Shining Force, but the rest that I've enjoyed seem to all be portables...

Dunno001 - I do see what you mean about P4... I guess I was thinking the battles themselves are definitely based on SRPG elements since your attack power should target the weak characteristic of the enemy as you no doubt already know.

However, you are right of course - it is a JRPG. Thanks for the correction.

Tactics Ogre.  The real one (PS1, Saturn import or SFC import/ROM) not that nerfed GBA spinoff.  I'd go for the SFC ROM (best soundtrack imo, zero loading, easy to find, full translation patch out there).  If you feel guilty, just buy the cart and play the ROM anyway.

Yeah.... Tactics Ogre is a great one... you don't have to grind, though it takes a lot of strategy... and the only way to save dead units is a VERY advanced spell you get later on.

I can't think of many more SRPGs that are GREAT that have permanent deaths...

Langrisser 2 had permanent deaths. I cant remember if Langrisser 4 and 5 had it or not.

Valkyria Chronicals...there...I said it, I went there.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

Super Robot Wars.  Best SRPG series in existence.  You really can't go wrong with any of them.

No permanent deaths though.  Well outside of the occasional story mandated.
