I think all of you who say anything but 'Mario' was the first thing to pop in your head is just being fanboyish. Seriously. Mario games are by far the biggest (and best) platforming games to have ever been created. Spanning over 20 years and is *most* people's first game let alone platforming game. I can't fathom anyone who would think *initially* of anything but Mario when platforming game is first mentioned unless they don't know what the term means. Then to define it, assuredly the person would use Mario. lol.

I'm not trying to sound Nintendo fanboyish, just being realistic on the size and scope of Mario games in our world, even outside of gaming.

mario is obviously big but your rant is stupid.  in this generation galaxy was a good game but i had no desire to replay it, NSMWii i couldn't even bear to finish, and galaxy 2 i've yet to play.  on the converse, i've played little big planet at least once every other week since release just to play the new user generated content.  for me...little big planet is the first thing to come to mind because little big planet is the platformer that i am playing, continue to play and most excited for a sequel of.

"Here we go!" popped into my head when I first saw the word "Platformer". Apparently I have voices in my head when it comes to these things.

The first game I thought of though was Sonic & Knuckles, though. So all is well.

Mario. Thats the first thing that poped into my head

2nd thing was Sonic. followed by Jak n daxter.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

Killzone 2. its not a fps. it a FIRST PERSON WAR SIMULATOR!!!! ..The true PLAYSTATION 3 launch date and market dominations is SEP 1st

Donkey Kong Country

Mario World

Sonic the hedgeog

Mario, he's the king of platformers.

LittleBigPlanet easily, as its the only platformer ive enjoyed as i usualy despise the genre, LBP's customization feature helped it to be "not boring", Mario or Sonic could never make me come back to them and replay them.

And to the guy going on about people not saying Mario, you act just like the GTA fanboys who feel people can't like any other sandbox game but GTA lol. Everyone grew up playing different things with much different taste than your own, some had the genesis first, others the snes first, others were PC gamers grow up.

You think Mario is the greatest? good for you, as a dominantly PC gamer i think LittleBigPlanet is the closest a console can get to a great platformer,  Platformers before LittleBigPlanet like Hack n slash games have seen little evolution and i would not spend $60 on one, LBP was the only one i did spend full price on because of content and replayability, are you gonna argue with me over thinking that?

Mario 64

I grew up playing Crash Bandicoot games with my family and friends and I have many unforgettable memories related to Crash Bandicoot games, more compared to all the Mario games I've played and if someone asked me what the OP asked, Crash Bandicoot comes into mind. Is that a problem? Am I being a fanboy?

Actually, this is where I flawed in my rant. I forget that my view is completely derived from my life. Since I grew up during Atari's dying days and Nitnendo's emergence as the best video game company the world has ever seen; my childhood was flooded with Mario and all that came with it. I forget that there are quite a few people on this forum who had that same experience just as Sony began to crush everything, therefore yes, they would naturally be more inclined to have fonder childhood memories of non-nintendo platformers.

However, I still don't get why somethign like LBP would be the first option unless you just finished playing it right before you saw the thread. I would think most people would immediately think of the platformer they mostly played as they grew up with in their respective generation. Mine was NES/SNES which could really only be Mario, while those from PS/PS2 would inevitably be somethign like Ratchet and Clank, etc, or potentially Mario if they also had a N64 as well. Then there are always those like you who only owned losing systems (lol, jk) and would be more familiar with Crash.

So I will retract my original post and declare that most of you probably are not just being fanboyish. Why can't the world just revolve around my personal experiences? :)

1. Read my reply that clarifies my original post, probably just above this.

2. This topic said nothign of 'best' platformer or one you enjoyed the most, it just asked what first pops in your head. To me it seems that Mario is literally to large of a symbol to realistically have anything else. However, that was a misguided judgement as it woudl probably be more akin to your gaming beginnings as mine were in NES/SNES (mostly) and if they were clearly different then Mario might not be the first name to come up.

I'm surprised more people didn't think of this....

Ratchet and Clank first sprang to mind!

Actually, even I thought of Mario first. :-O
