Forums - Gaming - What do you think about FF XIII after months having played it

Boutros said:

No it means there's a lack of good JRPG this gen (Except FFXIII). That's all.

Boutros.

Why are you doing this.

You said earlier in the thread you've played like two JRPGs this gen.

It's simply the best JRPG this gen. There's not a lot of competition though.

Seriously, I understand it's your opinion and that it will inevitably differ from mine, but are you really saying that FFXIII is superior to all these games?:

Dragon Quest IV, V & VI DS

Final Fantasy III and IV DS

Fantasy Fantasy Tactics A2

Xenoblade

Tales of Graces

Tales of Symphonia 2

Tales of Vesperia

Star Ocean: TLH

TWEWY

Mario & Luigi PiT and BIS

Pokemon D/P/Pt/HG/SS

Lost Oddesey

Blue Dragon

Chrono Trigger DS

Dragon Quest IX

Dragon Quest Monsters Joker & Joker 2

Fire Emblem SD and PoR

Final Fantasy: 4HoL

Disgaia: 1 2 ports and 3

Final Fantasy Tactics: WotL

and probably loads more I have forgotten.

Even if you  exclude the ports/remakes, IMO the likes of FF Tactics A2 and Mario&Luigi Bowser's Inside Story are far far superior to FFXIII

Anyway on topic, I though FFXIII was good but not great.  Nowhere near the masterpieces that were Final Fatantasies IV-VI and not quite as good but still awesome VII - IX

I only played Pokémon Soul Silver and TWEWY out of your list lol

But I'm still pretty sure FFXIII is better than all these games.

I can already confirm that Tales of Graces and Xenoblad are bothe better than FF13 unless the graphic style of FF13 is so important to you, I won't get my hands on Last Story yet obviously so can't judge on that part yet. FF13 is OK, but definitely not the best by far.

Famitsu says otherwise ;)

Only their review comments were wrong as hell saying it's linear til the midway point when it's linear through out the game with no real side stories, no real secrets, and they praised the graphics a lot, which is why I said "unless the graphic style is so important to you." They also liked the story it seems, when so many people spit on it, I felt the story was OK and very casual friendly, not great but it's there. Both Xenoblade and ToG stories were much better explained through out the game without the need for a fuck cluster of data logs. The problem I have with FF13 really is that sometimes, I can play it for a few hours and no issues, but then a lot of times, it makes me really really sleepy, making my second playthrough in JP VO really hard to finish atm and I didn't have that problem with Xenoblade or ToG, FF13 has a boring factor to it even when I first played it, it's strange. It's by means not a bad game, but when you look past the graphics, it really is pretty empty underneath it, but it's pretty, so 8/10 for me.

But yeah, here is the translation in a nut shell,

10: "Although the game is linear until the midway point, the story is substantial, like no FF before it, with its own distinctive appeal. The battles based around changing characters' roles are fresh and highly strategic. The tempo is speedy and you get very excited when fighting strong enemies. Being able to restart battles is a user-friendly feature I'm happy about.

9: "Unquestionably the highest echelon of event and movie scenes. Moreover, changing Optimas on a dime, the varied abilities and being able to use multiple magics at once bring real exhilaration to the battles. That high quality is unfortunately offset by a story that stays linear until the midway point. The lack of gimmicks during the middle of the game also worried me."

10: "The overwhelming graphics expressing every nook and cranny of this unique world, along with the praiseworthy direction, moved me!! The battle system is applicable both to beginners and micro-managers. The fights progress quickly, and have ratings, so you never grow tired and can always battle with a feeling of urgency. The melancholic story is also so dramatic, you can't tear your eyes away from it."

10: "I doff my hat to the overwhelming graphics and story. Since the game's various systems become denser as the story progresses, you find yourself pulled ever deeper into the experience. The summon battles take careful planning and strategy, so I was frustrated a few times, but the feeling of achievement when you win is something special. You'll be sorry if you don't play this!"

Ok well let's say FFXIII is the best console JRPG this gen.

Demon's Soul and Valkyria Chronicles says no.

lol Valkyria Chronicles is not a JRPG.

And Demon's Souls is a RPG from Japan yes but it's not a JRPG in genre. It's much more like a WRPG.

So FFXIII is still the best JRPG this gen. Hmm.

VC is a JRPG and a damn good one, I'd easily rate it higher than FF13 tbh.

I did play Valkyria Chronicles and it's not a JRPG.

To be honest, I think it's much more of a shooter than a RPG.

Are you kidding me?

IMO if ff12 didn't exist, ff13 would be the worst of the numbered fantasies.

Also, you need to play WotL before you can critcise it, that game is immense.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Even then! Even then you said you've played like two. That is not anywhere close to the number of JRPGs on the PS3!

Quest 64 was the best JRPG ..... on the N64. See that's not helping.

If your intent is to turn this into a joke thread, it's not working too well atm. =P
