Forums - Sony - Killzone 3 Interview: Taking Cues from Uncharted and God of War + Screens

An interview with Guerrilla Games was posted by Examiner yesterday:

It covers general stuff about the game, but the highlights for me discussed the campaign's narrative:

Uncharted 2 was a real game changer with the character-driven storytelling. It used to be the case that a great game could have a sloppy storyline with sloppy dialogue. Naughty Dog did the story and script so well, every game from now on will be held against that kind of quality. Games in the future won't be able to get away with sloppiness. They raised the bar in that sense. And now we have to step it up in those departments.

[...]

Going back to your influences from Uncharted 2 and God of War III, were there any specific aspects or features from those games that really wowed you and pushed you guys further?

Steven
: The helicopter chase in Uncharted 2 that was revealed in E3 2009 where the building collapsed was a big one. That was a magnificent piece of gameplay. It really showed off what the experience of playing Uncharted would be like. I knew right then that I had to play it.

For God of War III, it was having bosses on top of bosses on top of bosses. It's so over the top but so well-executed at the same time. One of the cool moments is where you defeat Posidon as the scene changes to the first person view of your victim and you're still Kratos, but you're at the same time being smacked around. Those are tricks and standout moments for me.

It sounds like they're really stepping their game up when it comes to the campaign.  They've already mentioned how they want to make Helghan seem like more of a living, breathing world with this one, shedding light on the history of the Helghast, but they're also putting a major emphasis on improving the dialogue, acting, and set pieces.  It's going to make for one exciting ride!

The more I hear and see, the more I'm convinced that this will be to Killzone 2 what Uncharted 2 was to Uncharted.  It's nice that they're putting so much effort into the story mode, considering how few shooter devs bother these days.

There are also some more gameplay videos from E3:

I like the chatter over the radio.  The dialogue is more natural and fitting than anything we were exposed to in Killzone 2.  It just feels more authentic and less game-y, and it helps you feel like you're really there.  The voice acting is obviously still placeholder, though.

Gamersyde also rehosted the latest screens from Killzone.com in excellent quality:

I wish you get to chose the control scheme,

KZ2 like controls for those who liked the feel of weight (like me) and normal FPS feel.

I really wanted to see some new settings on KZ3. I was blown away by the graphics in KZ2, but was disappointed by the lack of water and trees.

It was a dream come true for me....when they announced that there was going to be a helghast jungle. Can't wait to get a another top 1% weekly trophy...I had absolutely no life that week...

This, really! The collaboration of their studios is second to none!

Having said that, Guerrilla is quite capable on their own, KZ2 3 prove that quite nicely.

They certainly are, especially when it comes to things like multiplayer, or more importantly, the grim, visceral, and quite menacing Helghan aesthetic.

Of course, they have certainly showed weakness in areas like narrative, and their focus on that aspect with Killzone 3 highlights the greatest characteristic of the SCEWWS entity.  Each studio looks to each other for ideas on how to improve their weaknesses, as well as simply trying to one up each other, and they aren't afraid to talk to each other in an order to do so.  Take for example Naughty Dog.  They are excellent storytellers and masters of singleplayer, but you can be sure they were eying Insomniac when designing Uncharted 2's coop campaign.  Similarly, both Media Molecule and Guerrilla Games have borrowed Sony Santa Monic's MLAA implementation for LBP2 and KZ3.

They are probably the most organized house of developers in the world, aside from Nintendo's EAD groups.
