With word of the PSP 2 on the lips of every game fan and all those parties interested and involved in the gaming industry, there’s been a lot of discussion about the potential plans of the device to have a phone. The biggest question that keeps coming up when a phone is mentioned is what the OS would be. Many believe that the phone should be secondary to gaming in order to ensure the device stays true to the “core” gamer that Playstation caters to. That’s not very likely with a popular OS like Android. So this leads everyone to ask what could be the best operating system for a gaming device with a phone involved. The best answer could very well be the most shocking ever.
Gaming has seen crazy partnerships throughout the years - Nintendo games appearing on the CD-I and Atari creating publishers like Tengen to publish games on rival consoles are just a couple of examples of what can happen when deals are drawn up behind the scenes. Rivals sometimes work very closely over short periods in order to ensure success in the long run. It’s because of this that Microsoft could potentially be the best possible option for an operating system to create a successful gaming device and phone. It wouldn’t be the first time they’ve worked together.
Everyone knows that the Sony VAIO computers have done very well running on the Windows platform (like 99% of non-Mac PCs). Most still remember that Microsoft had approached Sony with a partnership back in 1997 to use Windows CE on the PS2, but when Sony felt MS wanted too big a stake, MS was sent on their way with Sega and the Dreamcast and inevitably the Xbox brand.
It might sound crazy, but it’s a win/win for both parties. Fanboys might be appalled by the idea because it’s two of the biggest rivals in gaming. We have to remember that stranger things have happened. The gaming integration would be perfect for the portable gaming / phone PSP 2. A modified WinMo 7 could offer the perfect solution for the PSP2 OS issue on everyone’s mind. Is it too far fetched? We’ve seen crazier things happen. I never thought in 2000 that I’d see Sonic on a Nintendo console. We never thought Bungie and Insomniac would be multiplatform. Gaming can be a crazy thing.
