Even though not my personal fave RPG series I think of Final Fantasy.  FF to RPGs in recognition is like when you say Platformers people think of Mario.  So I guess FF is in a sense the mascot series of RPGs. Or in TV/film if you mention sci fi most today might think of Star Trek or Star Wars.

FF just has it's mark on the genre.

I don't consider the fact he ignored the fact Pokemon isn't commonly considered an RPG pwnage.

Although, if you think ignoring is pwnage, go ahead and continue to not add to the discussion.

It's okay to associate FF with RPGs, especially since you've been playing it so much in the past year.

The first game to come to mind for me typically when thinking about RPG's is Earthbound since it's the one I've played through the most times.

Do you really think that the recent 8 million people who have bought pokemon golf/silver do not consider pokemon an rpg ?

Also, you must not forget that there is a lot of pc gamer or xbox fan who probably never play FF and will think rpg = Diablo or WoW or the hundred of dungeon and dragon game (Dungeon siege , baldurs gate , nerverwinter night etc.)
