
NPD has released the May sales figures for the US, and the numbers reflect the third best-selling May on record after 2008 and 2009.
However, the industry as a whole was down by 5 percent for the month.
Industry sales total $823.5 million, down 5 percent for the month
During May, industry sales were down 10 percent yoy, and down 5 percent over April. Total sales came in at approximately $823.5M.
Microsoft contributed the greatest share of revenue to industry sales for the month and year-to-date with $254 million in total spent on 360 hardware, software and accessories.
However, PS3 showed the greatest percentage in growth, with platform sales across hardware, software, and accessories up 32 percent for the month, and 28 percent year-to-date.
Nintendo takes top two spots on the hardware charts
Portable hardware contributed the most to the decline in hardware sales for the month, yet Nintendo DS was the best-selling hardware system for May, moving 383.7K units, which is still down 57.1K from 440.8K moved in April.
Wii posted sales of 334.8K units, compared to 277.2K in April, which is a 57.6K jump in units handed over the counter.
During the month, Xbox 360 moved approximately 195K units which is 9.2K more than April.
Sony came in second for May, with 154.5K PS3 units moved, which is 26.3K units less than April’s 180.8K.
PSP sold approximately 10K units less during May, by only moving 59.4K.
When compared to last year, hardware sales are flat, with declines in sales resulting price drops when comparing retail figures from last year.

When compared with April figures, both PS3 and 360 realized a unit sales increase in hardware.
However, when comparing May 2010 hardware figures yoy, this sector of the industry fell 20 percent from $303M to $241.5M.
Software sales up 4 percent at $466.3M with RDR tops
May was the tenth consecutive month of yoy software sales increases for the PS3 combined with hardware and accessories sales increases for the platform.
Eight of the top ten SKU’s for the month were new releases, helping raise the average selling price for software overall and contributing to total revenues.
Red Dead Redemption was the best-selling game for the month, moving 1.5M units across all platforms, exceeded lifetime sales Red Dead Revolver.
For May year-to-date, 43 percent of total software units sold were online capable, compared to 37 percent yoy.

There were many high-profile titles released in May that didn’t make the top ten, some of which include: Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Split/Second, Blur, Lost Planet 2, and ModNation Racers.
