1. You are not alone. I went through long-term unemployment from 2001-2004. It didn't make me a better person. It stomped my ass into little pieces of hamburger meat and made me depressed, angry and miserable.

2. Tell your partner/friends/family and ACCEPT THEIR SUPPORT. Can't stress this enough. I made the mistake of pushing people away when I was down, and that made things worse.

3. Get all the benefits you can - unemployment insurance, foodstamps, temporary assistance, everything. No need to be ashamed, we pay for this stuff with our taxes anyway.

4. Credit card payments and other forms of debt: decide what you can afford and what is essential, and what is not. Whatever you do, DON'T pile up debt, it will come back to haunt you later.

5. Apply for degree programs or other education.

6. This sounds crazy, but... keep on gaming. Videogames were a lifesaver for me, they kept me going. I know prices can be high, but there are plenty of used games and bargains out there.

Wow ! You can always relie no the kindness of strangers! Or Ciberfriends? Thank you anyway, everybody.

Point 6? Oh yeah. Right now I am a little hooked up with Mass Effect

Hah yeah! Play Rpg's, you'll get more moneys worth out of them.

the support in here is great

Another thing you can do is to always learn to do something different.

I got my Bachelors in electronic engineering. but as I was waiting for a good job according to my career I worked in technical support by phone. I started learning software and game programming, graphic design (I'm no skilled, but with a lot of work I managed to do something). This gave me more opportunities to look for other jobs or go freelance.

Find other things you can do and work on them, so you can be flexible.

i have a technical degree in drafting, after graduating college (2005)5 temp agencies couldn't find me a job in that feild so i got a licences to operate a forklift got a job with it and 10months later got laid off(2007).

it's always good to have a second skill or 5

Get some skills, even if they have nothing at all to do with your career.

Ever want to learn to paint or speak German or design a web page? Now's your chance! Scope out posters at your local community center and you'll probably find all kinds of cheap or free workshops and classes you could take, or you could buy a couple books, or if you're really hard-up for cash (I don't normally advocate this, but I'll cut the unemployed some slack) download some professional design software and start playing around.

Who knows, your hobby might open up career doors in the future. If nothing else, slapping more skills on your resume makes you look like a well-rounded renaissance man who likes to keep busy. Who is the school going to hire, the history teacher with ten years of experience or the history teacher with ten years of experience who's fluent in German and knows how to design web sites?

Hey dude,

I lost my beloved job as a radio producer few months ago as well. Office politics. Got backstabbed by my manager. I was the best producer. People loved my programs. It was innovative, awesome, but theres no point if your boss doesn't appreciate it. He comes in to work once a week for 3-4 hours then goes off to play golf. And I have my manager who  brainwashes him and tries to get everyone fired and slowly bringing in her own friends to the workplace.

Im not going to get into any details but one of my proudest programs was the Fashion Week special program that I did for the radio. I have an Economics degree. but fashion is my greatest passion in life. For years I've been trying to get into the fashion industry to no avail because I do not have a fashion degree. I've held jobs as a stock broker, advertising, radio producer but I couldn't get fashion out of my head. Then I realised that even if I can't get in the fashion industry, its alright.

Im gonna use whatever little talent that I have, (Music, Fashion) to make this world a better place and spread the love of music and fashion, and what I did was the Fashion Week program that I mentioned where I introduced songs from fashion week and talked abt the most influential designers ever,  I did a Tribute program to honour artists who have gone and have left a treasure trove of music for us (Jeff Buckley, John Lennon, Marvin Gaye, Elvis, Eva Cassidy, MJ, Janis Joplin,  etc etc)...I did a band special featuring music from the 30s to current day music to show how music evolved over time. I got into trouble at work to do a Walt Disney special for the kids (Im not gonna elaborate on what happened) I did so many wonderful programs and put all my heart in it..I would get praised by the DJs, clients...but what happened next? My manager did a serious mistake and put the blame on me, and I was called up and told that I was fired.

So I moved on, and got a job as a fashion writer and stylist. I was over the moon, cuz I've been trying to get into the fashion industry for so many years and it had been so hard cuz of my Economics degree and you dont know how much it meant to me. Then a day later I got another call that I got a job as a Research Executive which will be paying me $1000 more than the fashion writer job. At the same time, my mum announced that she tendered her resignation, and my dad's already retired, plus I have an illness (medical bills amounting to $600 a month), so it was with a heavy heart that I told the editor that I couldnt accept the job as a writer and I took the job as a Research Executive...I worked for 2 weeks, and then It was Good Friday and I had to go to church, my boss rostered me to work on Good Friday so I made a deal with my colleague that I'll come in on Sat and he'll come in on Friday and it was all good. Then an hour later the boss called me in and told me that Im fired cuz Im catholic and have to go to church on Good Friday. LOL. She said my heart wasnt in work.

I've been to countless interviews since then. I've made it to 2nd round interviews, 3 rounds, fared really well only to be told that they've hired someone else. Scam jobs are aplenty, as well as insurance sales jobs (YUCK). I'm going to an interview in a few hours time to do real estate sales. It's not my passion (still fashion music), but I have to suck it up and move on or else I wouldn't have the money to buy the clothes I wear, pay the bills or give money to my parents.

The worst thing is me going back to my old company's website (the producer job) and seeing that they are doing rush work, uninspired work and going to my manager's facebook and seeing that she's having an awesome time, the producer taking over me doing rubbish work is her personal friend, and she's got her ex-bandmate roped in to help (who rushes thru work and does uninspired programs as well.)

Hopefully reading my story will well, make you feel better that theres someone out there who has it worse? lol. I'd also like to point out that unlike USA, theres no such thing as unemployment benefit in my country. What happens if you're ill (like me, $600 a month on medication) and out of job and run out of money? You die. Govt wont do shit about it. And the ministers in my country are paid millions of dollars a year in my country Singapore.

Oh and I just got news that my best friend whom I confided in that I lost my job just had a bigmouth moment and told our circle of friends that Im unemployed...oh goodness.

I used to go to the gym 4-5 times a week but now I just work out at home, cuz when I step out of my house I get nosy neighbours asking me why Im not at work so I just shut the door when Im at home.

Doesn't matter if you're a Sony fanboy, Wii Fanboy or MS Fanboy. We're all here to lend you our support, a shoulder to cry on and our ears. Hope everything gets better for you.

Well, I didn't want to give any details, but my experience is pretty bad aswell. But I have learned that there is no use in going through all that again, and again. and again... Only now, like three weeks later I am starting to sleep better.

Thanks for your story. I sure have plenty of things I can relate to.
