Forums - Microsoft - Should Microsoft patch for Kinect?

I can understand why headset voice command wouldn't catch on. Most developers probably saw no pressing need to dump the resources into developing the software for their games, but in the case of Kinect the software is now there to easily license, or will be free ware from Microsoft. Thus it wouldn't be a real financial hurdle, and might actually be a real benefit for their games.

now you are just making excuses

its not that hard for a few commands

MS will licensce it but this alone wasn't the problem

I am unsure as to how I am supposedly making excuses. Am I excusing bad development practices? Am I excusing the limitations of the software. Am I excusing the limitations of the hardware. What exactly am I excusing? I could kind of use some clarification as to what, and more specifically what you think the reasons are.

not you but developers if they really wanted to add the feature

also if voice commands then you don't want to shout across your living room

Well I remember seeing Natal demoed with Burnout Paradise...maybe there could be a few games that aren't 'firing on all cylinders' that could possibly be patched.  If they were though I don't see any reason for them not to announce it at e3.

i totally forgot about this

Burnout paradise was a very good graphical game so this prompts the question?

but it would be tough if GEARS3 after GEARS2 went back to burnaout paradise -level grapichs, people would be angered

Wasn't that last years E3?  Kinect was not running on a 360 back then. all the calculations were done by a separate computer it was connected to. i would not even be to sure if Burnout was running on a 360 for that demo.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

With all the talk of the launch lineup for Kinect I had a revelation. With all the focus on building games around Kinect I have not heard Microsoft speaking up about backwards compatibility with their existing lineup. Be it just voice commands for previous games, or motion detection prompts. We all talk about the lack of core or hardcore titles for the peripheral. Just for the cost of a small team Microsoft could patch dozens, or even hundreds of older titles that already fill this criteria. So wouldn't this be a perfect way to dispatch the more critical comments that they have been hearing.

I doubt most core or hardcore players would want to drop their controller, but if you add voice recognition or hand prompts to augment hard control schemes I doubt many of this demographic would complain. Hell it might give the peripheral a new stronger sales point. Play your old games again, ditch the menu, speak and let it be so. Instead of the peripheral just being about increasing market share with a new demographic. Microsoft could really use this tech to enhance games that already exist. I don't think it has to be a either or proposition here. This tech could be used to make hardcore games better, and they don't even have to build new games for that. Just patch in support for the tech on many of their older games.

It depends on the game, they can't just patch kinnect gameplay to any game just like that. lol

What about games that already have voice work or some of the camera games?  I think that's what he's talking about... even if it's just switching weapons or bringing up the inventory... simple things that would be convenient to the users.

It would be good, but I don't see it happening, they want people to buy new games (MS and the developers).

I also think the whole patching idea would have been much more possible if they opted to stick with the hardware solution instead of going software solution. Although this would have undoubtedly brought a higher price tag.

yes the HW solution would have been good for games

but it would be bad when people can't buy it cause it would have been costly, not that its cheap now

Haven't read the whole thread, just skimmed it, but two comments.

What do you mean hardware solution? What makes kinect so cool isn't the hardware involved, its the woftware behind. Which as far as I know can't be replicaed by hardware. So could you guys clarify or did I miss something?

OT: I hope they do not patch, as it seems like kinect is someting that should be programmed for from the begining or it will feel fake/suck/not real. So I don't expect patches unless thay are actually needed( ie quiz games with voice commands all I could think of now)
