Forums - Sony - Rumour: 3D Kinect Like Camera for PS3

A reliable source at SCE London Studio (makers of various EyeToy games and applications) has informed us that he or she has witnessed end-to-end user testing of 3D Eye chat.

On the surface this doesn’t sound like much, but think a little deeper and you can see this is a very big deal.

It makes sense with the current push behind 3D that Sony would persue such a venture, bringing 3D video communication into the living room and maybe even the office.

Moreover this also means that a 3D Eye is being developed which means Sony are stepping on Microsoft’s’ toes when it comes to 3D space detection with a camera.

If Sony were to expand on this and use the Cell Processor to calculate extraordinary 3D accuracy over and above what Kinect can achieve, we could see Kinect easily superceded.

As it stands at the moment this is a rumour and we are speculating, but you have to admit that 3D video chat would certainly be a good way to generate consumer interest, especially those with relatives and loved ones living far away.

while i can see sony working on a 3D Eye I don't think the end result would be very kinect like.  See a pretty good idea imo.

please sony don't do this, the amount of abuse we shall receive as ps user's will be beyond bearable.

it's the future of handheld

Wait a moment.

There has been an enormous amount of crap floating around making out the marginal difference in processing power between the Xbox 360 and PS3 to be some huge thing.  Now suddenly a PSEye without advanced chips is going to supercede the Xbox 360's Xenon Substantial onboard Kinect computing power with JUST the CELL?

Right.

Right.

its just a rumour and sony didn't say whether it will be releaseing it or not and no word whether it will have a processor or not.

we don't have confirmation of the product and you are jumpin onto the technical details...........lmao

and nobody said it would superseed 360 and KINECT abilities

I don't think he was saying all the sudden the ps3 would use this camera to do what Kinect does with seperate processors. If he did then he's not aware that Kinect is a massve drain on resources because of a conveluded detection system. I think he was suggesting that the 3d camera could capture the gamer in 3d. Certain move games show the gamer while they are playing and THAT image could then be in 3d to accompany 3d games.

Sony passed on the tech before in favour of motion controls. when you add the controls to the eye you basically have a 3D eye anyway. sure I could see the eye for the ps4 being like Kinect plus the ps4's version of the move but the reality of the matter is the move eye can do basically everything Kinect can anyway so what is the point.

correct me if I am wrong
stop me if I am bias
I love a good civilised debate (but only if we can learn something).

That being said, this is a photoshopped image. Look at the metal mesh and the odd drop in resolution on the plastic between the lenses
