BioShock 2 was not “hugely successful,” admits Feder

Take-Two CEO Ben Feder has admitted that BioShock 2 wasn’t the smash it should have been.

“It was ultimately successful, but not hugely successful,” he said, talking to VentureBeat at E3. “We are also looking forward to other hits coming this year.”

Feder added, though, that the game had made money.

“BioShock 2 is profitable for the company and is a great success. The franchise is viable and has a lasting impact on consumers,” he said.

The exec pointed towards a lack of “surprise” as a reason for the relative flop.

“The surprise factor is always going to be there,” he said. “Sometimes they work for you and sometimes they work against you. Our goal is to have them work for us. More often than not. We are in the business of creating huge franchises and launching hits.”

BioShock 2 released on February 9 for 360, PS3 and PC. The 360 version scored 562,900 sales in the US in its launch month, while the PC and PS3 versions failed to chart.

Take-Two said at the beginning of March that more than 3 million units of the title had shipped to retailers.

The entire interview at VentureBeat is worth a read as well.

bioshocks 2 problem was it didn't feel like a sequel so much as an expansion pack.  it was a good game but coming from bioshock 1 it didn't add anything worthwhile.

The game shipped 3 million but has only managed 1.9m from 360 PS3 versions; PC sales probably aren't too close to the PS3 version (650k).

There was a lot of hype going into the release of the game, and in terms of pre-ordering, was the only game Gamestop would talk about during the months preceeding its release.

I felt the game was flat overall, and didn't bring many new things with the exception of a few powers.  I thought the first Bioshock was overrated to begin with, so the good yet disappointing sales of B2 are no shocker to me. you can't hype it enough to hide its flaws.

I do wonder how much Take-Two expected from it though.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

While fun, it was a sequel to a game which totally didn't need a sequel.

They've totally flubbed the DLC so far, too.

maybe if they actually spent some time working on the single player rather than wasting time adding a crummy multiplayer more people would have purchased it.
