Sony's first party is good, but Nintendo's is in a whole different league. I'm not saying a new Sony handheld / console wouldn't do well, but I definitely don't see why people assume they have any chance at outdoing Nintendo just by "not screwing up."
Why would Nintendo need something unique to remain leader? I don't understand that mentality. Nintendo has the strongest first party by far, and if they come into a gen with AAA third party support (which they virtually had none of in the west this gen), it'd be no contest. It's the third party games that keep the Sony / MS consoles afloat, and if that differential is removed, well...
It's Sony / MS that need to do something unique to overcome the current leader. I wouldn't say that's impossible, but the odds are really against them.

That's more like an opinion tho...I personally think Sony first party is on a whole different league than both other parties BUT that's a debate for a different thread...so let's not go there
And going by your argument they should have been the market leader in every generation they were in the market yes? Not like their first party suddenly came up with killer new IP for the console
The NUMBER ONE selling point when Wii came out was the motion controls, simple as that, if not for that they wouldn't have had such a huge gap between them and the HD twins...btw this doesn't mean they couldn't have been number one, it means there wouldn't be such a huge gap
We will see if this is true or not if they come out next gen with something unique that outshines the competition....but like I said, for us gamers, more rivalry the better so it's all good

whatever sony does it will be too late (like move and kinect). i can't wait for the shameless quotes: "3D on a portable is a horrible idea, but on a home console its the only way anyone should play video games, ever."
What they need to do, is do exactly the same as the 3DS but psp style; meaning 3D without glasses and a huge omgwtfbbq lineup on launch date. With a price cheaper that 3DS( That, might be hard). THEN, they will put up a good challenge for the 3DS. Also a second analog would always be welcomed :D
PSP-4000 will barely do anything..except in japan, maybe.
