I don't recall CoD games having alien jungles filled with Electric spiders or in an arctic sea.....I don't recall jet packs either.

No wonder, The character designs were orientated on the Nazi regime. One of the developers said on the Jimmy Fallon show, that "KZ3 is like World War II 500 years in the future". Another example:

Look at the symbol on it's helmet. See the similarity? Also, If you have some knowledge about the Third Reich, you will immediately notice the similarities while playing Killzone 2.

Helghast were humans. The Helghan Corporation bought 2 planets from the UCA (United Colonial Army) when Earth's resources were running out or something....

One planet was Vekta, very similiar to Earth.

The other was Helghan, a planet with rough atmosphere, unsuitable to live in, but was the hub of energy for the universe or something like that.

But some weird issues came up or something like that and the ISA who work for the UCA, invaded Vekta and captured it and the ghast were forced to live in the harsh conditions of Helghan...thats why they hate the armed forces of Earth and they wanted Vekta back in KZ1.

They were those gas masks since they need to breathe..lol... and they evolved after living in that harsh environment for a long time.

A quite clichéd backstory but I guess it works. But I don't like the Nazi references.
