Im thinking of upgrading to a xbox 360 S because my elite had RRoD.

Does anyone know if I can transfer my game saves from my old HDD (by taking it to a friends house) to the new 360 S using a USB stick?

You can do that or you can contact Microsoft via xbox.com and request a free data transfer cable.  It takes about 3 days for it to come (even though they say it'll take longer).  The transfer process is painless but it can take a while depending on how much data you have stored on the old HDD.  I'd request the cable now so that when/if you get a new 360 you'll already have it.
