I'm not so sure Microsoft's policy for charging for DLC has much to do with achievements in particular. Back when Crash Course was announced for L4D1, the guys at Valve made some comments that implied charging is just the way things go with MS:
| In a recent interview, Valve’s Chet Faliszek revealed that Microsoft is behind the 560 Microsoft Point ($7) price tag on the “Crash course” Left 4 Dead DLC on the Xbox 360. Faliszek stated, “We own our platform, Steam. Microsoft owns their platform. They wanted to make sure there’s an economy of value there.”
[...] Valve president Gabe Newell addressed this issue last year stating, “On the consoles, they want us to charge money for [DLC], because that’s in their model, and our model is very much more to grow the community by giving out free updates. That’s harder for us.” |
As for Red Dead Redemption, I think their hand may have been forced in that situation. It'd be a PR blunder if the DLC for the biggest ps3/360 release thus far this year was offered free on PSN but not XBL.
