Honestly, it feels like the open beta, which sucks (but I've only briefly ran around the cities). I probably won't give the game an actual judgment for another week or so and then give the game a month before I make a final judgment if I continue playing.
One of my coworkers played it for a few hours last night and he's hating it. All the bugs from the open beta are still there (he encountered and died many times from the enemy already engaged bug), said the UI is still slow and clunky, and they didn't increase the mob count.
I know every game can't immediately start out incredibly and I perfectly understand there will be bugs but so far FFXIV has been pretty much a giant disaster.

ouch.
But I reckon a lot of this is just opening launch problems that every MMO has, I mean did you have FF11 from day 1?
It'll be interesting to see how peoples opinions change in a month or two.

Yeah, I hope much of this is just launch jitters. The general lag and bugs I assume will be fixed, it's mainly the awful UI I'm worried about. It's like they tried so hard to differentiate themselves from WoW's incredible UI that they made the exact opposite and made about the worst UI imaginable.
Not every MMO should be WoW and not every MMO should be as polished as the six year old WoW on day one, but Jesus, look at your competition and see what they did right. WoW has an easy to use quick interface that is about as good as it gets. Take that and imrpove upon it, not make a UI that's so different it's just one of the worst UI's out there.
I know griping about the UI really sounds like a minor thing but it is just so bad that it overshadows all the potential the game has. Everything in the game is an unintuitive chore and if that's something they don't fix fast the game is just going to flat out fail.
And it's not like FFXIV is SE's first MMO either, they've already had one go at it. While FFXI's UI wasn't perfect by any means, it was better than XIV's. Making a decent useable UI should be kid stuff to them by now.
