Forums - Nintendo - Iwata: 3DS is serious system, get serious games.

Hmm they must be at least partially scared about iphone and other smartphones taking some of the shovelware market they had with DS so now they run to hardcore gamers for rescue.

It's like a return of prodigal son ;)

Eh, Nintendo's just launching it like they always launch their platforms in terms of their own software; appeal to the core audience.  DS and Wii were no different really, with brands like Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, Kirby, Yoshi, Fire Emblem, Metroid, Wario Ware, Paper Mario, Advance Wars and others announced before launch.

The difference now is that Iwata's correctly identified essentially "what went wrong" with DS/Wii... namely that desirable 3rd party games weren't there early on enough (or at all) to help build a more diverse marketplace that could better sustain 3rd party games.  That's why you've seen Nintendo go out of it's way to court the sort 3rd party support that one would usually expect at a PlayStation launch for 3DS (and Iwata's said they'll do the same for Wii's successor).  This is barely reflective of Apple or Google, Nintendo's aims here are securely at Sony and Microsoft's throat.
