Versus will go multi.  Dark Cloud 3 and (for some dumb reason) Demon's Souls 2 don't exist.

PS3's Japanese exclusives are probably going to dry up imo.  Sholveware from the likes of Gust/Compile Heart/Idea Factory are all I can really see continuing, MGS/Valkyria/Yakuza/others already jumped ship to PSP and 3DS is about the vacuum up developers PS2-style.  Japan's ready for next gen more or less.

I dunno....Japan responded strongly to FF13. Versus will add to SE's momentum in Japan. Adding it to the 360 wouldn't help a thing. Given though, the 360 had great sales for what it got. With the PS3's worldwide momentum I see no reason for SE to put versus on the 360. The PS3 is starting to rake in DLC from EA, THQ and UBISOFT that the 360 used to enjoy but no longer does because of lost momentum.

I think you're mistaking "momentum" with "moneyhats". ;)

And Versus turning out like FFXIII (exclusive in japan, multiplatform in the west) wouldn't surprise me in the least.  That way SE can double dip on the promotional support again.

Sony doesn't need to moneyhat a Japanese company win over Japan. All they have to do is go to a Japnese dev and say this: "If you want sales in Japan, the Japanese are on our system, so come aboard of FAIL!" ....yep....pretty simple. Microsoft has to pay because they aren't in, in Japan.

Both Microsoft and Sony each pretty clearly paid out for FFXIII imo.  You saw that in the advertising, promotion and system bundles pushed by Sony in Japan and Microsoft in the west.  And really, it worked out beautifully for Square Enix, which is why I can see them going for that sort of setup again.

And 5 million Japanese isn't exactly a great bargaining chip.  The Japanese are on DS, PSP and Wii (in that order) for the most part.  And soon they'll be moving to the 3DS wholesale (as will JP developers).

How about no again? SE saw clearly that Xbox 360's weren't selling in Japan so they barred the 360 version from japan. The true demand for FF is in japan, so that helped Sony by leaps and bounds. Microsoft didnt need to bundle FF in the west because it was futile.

I think another question that goes in tandem with this is how long the momentium for Kinect will last. will people continue to buy the peripheral after the new year?? maybe, i think Kinect and the new 360 will have an intial surge towards the end of the year, but it will be front loaded.

i think after that the strength of the PS3 library will power through the 2011. i think FF Versus and MGS Rising will have a great response in Japan. and theres Portal 2 and some MMO games that are featuring on PS3, that will likely interest some PC fans.

its tough to call, but i think that PS3 will have a very strong 2010- 2011. but will we have a repeat of the success we had in 2009 with UC2, the thing is GT5 is an old franchise that has been in abscense for the last 4-5 years, so i think it will be up to the likes of LBP2 to carry the console this fall.

Good game selection!  Although I strongly disagree with your predictions for sales.  Killzone 3 is going to suddenly sell 2.5x as much as Killzone 2?  Uncharted 3 will probably make it to 4 million though.  And that is well deserved.  Uncharted 1 and 2 were my favorite PS3 games so far.

Oh come on.  Japan had Sony's fingerprints all over it, as did the west Microsoft's.  If you don't think Square Enix bargained and pitted them against each other, to secure the best possible deal for themselves, then I really don't know what to tell you.  Wada may be many things but (contrary to message board opinions) he's not a fool.

FFXIII 360 would've sold at least 200k in Japan.  They wouldn't have given up those sales (even if they're not much)  if they weren't compensated in some way.

Sooo....the only blockbuster games this gen have been GTA4, Halo 3 and MW2? I'm pretty sure those are the only ones that have done even close to 3 million in week 1.

That and any Wii and DS games that do similar figures (there are many) . Anything under 5 million is little more than filler.

poor RAZurrection...trying to justify its choice by downplaying the competition....how sad is that? =/

I'm judging all by the same standards. It's not my fault Sony doesn't have blockbuster game for 2011...that might have something to do with them being last place. Just a thought.

iWarMachine said:

it's ok RAZ, it's not your fault that Sony's bought Naughty Dog...it's not your fault that you can't play Uncharted 2...at least you have Fable 2, and Milo and Kate.

I think the irony here is that one of those games which is filler on Xbox 360 is more successful commercially than what was supposed to be the biggest title on PS3. You can diss on Fable and Molyneux all you like, he's bringing in the numbers...a PS3 game has to FLYYY to reach Lionheads averages. And Naughty Dog? Really? How times have changed, I doubt PS2 fanboys would have championed Jak 2 as the savior of gaming....but then they had bigger exclusives back then...and weren't as desperate.

You just made that up didn't you?

No. I usually have about a 5 million "low end" blockbuster, tbh it's borderline, the seminal few elevated above the unremarkable 3 million figures of Lego Indiana Jones, Kung Fu Panda and Uncharted 2,  the real meat is in the 10-15m sellers and beyond and I apply that equally to all systems...some people are upset because some systems, that shall remain nameless, don't have any exclusive software that does that.

No blockbusters?

Define "blockbuster"?

5 million sales minimum ltd.

3 million week one.

Then can you show me the blockbuster games confirmed to be releasing next year for ANY console, please?

he's blind i tell you. thats what i'd call an established IP. he's only saying that because it won't happen.he's thinking MS not sony

I know exactly what he's trying to do. He's well known for it...

And it's not exactly going to happen with the 360's lineup neither. The only one with a shot at it is Gears 3, and that will take a miracle to reach over 3Mil week 1.

Wii's, again... HIGHLY unlikely for ANY game that will be released.

Haha maybe it is just me that notices this, but I hear every year from all sides that the NEXT YEAR will be bigger than the current one.  That and momentum will carry and blah blah blah.  I mean it's a broken record that won't stop and I know exactly why it happens.  It happens because the next year can be ANYTHING.  It always can be bigger.  The current year can only be what it is now especially after E3 when most is known.

I know people like to do that to get excited and build hype and unfortunately make truth claims about a company and their competitors, but can't we just be happy with what we are getting this year.  Or what we have already had this year.  I mean so far this has been a very good year in gaming for all system owners.  And 2011 is shaping up to be good, but let's worry about that when 2011 actually gets closer.  It's easy to get hyped about the unknown but trust me, it is a lot easier to find enjoyment in things that are already out or things that are knocking on the door.  No need to disregard the now for the future, when now is pretty damn good.

Now PS3 does have a pretty good 2010 lineup already and coming up and 2011 is shaping up pretty good for the platform.  I won't comment on how big they will be because right now it is too hard to tell.  Obviously Sony will  keep providing the system with exclusive games so if that is what you mean by momentum then sure.  I'm sure there are going to be a few 3rd parties that also contribute some major players to that exclusive lineup, most notably being Versus 13.  2011 Should be a good year for PS3 owners but who knows how the entire year will play out.  I'm just hoping Last Guardian will make it out in 2011.  Not seeing it at E3 started making me question potential release dates.  I hope it doesn't release in 2012... too long to wait.

Oh and as for the definition of blockbuster, it is a broad term that really doesn't have any set specifications.  I'd say and I think many would agree that Dragon Age: Origins last year was a blockbuster hit.  But obviously wasn't the best selling title or any numbers that were breaking records.  Really the best way to describe these things is one that is successful financial and a hit with mass media and consumers.  Obviously it doesn't take 3 million first week or 5 million total to be able to accomplish that but obviously can't have subpar sales or an opening that no one knew existed.  And of course everything in between and beyond.

Zucas you explained everything perfectly what i was thinking... :D

My hat off to you sir :P

Could the topic starter create a thread like this for X360? I'm curious to how that line up will look like :)
